home made jigheads
Does anyone make their own? I bought some size6 aberdeens and size 0 splitshots but am having a hard time making things work. I bent the hook eye up (towards the hook point) but have found it is very stiff and it even snapped on me once, so I've left it at about 45 degrees from the original point. Is this enough?
Also, I'm having trouble cramping the splitshot to make it stay in place. By the time I can cramp it enough with pliers to stay in place without moving, the lead is totally deformed from its ball shape. ?? When I manage a good jig, what sould a use for a barb/prong to keep the plastic from sliding off the hook? Any advice would be helpfull. Mitchell. |

Hmm I have no idea about these things but maybe you could heat the metal up abit before bending it? And I think I'v read somewhere about maknig your own jigheads ... cant remember where it was from though

We make our own
If you have a look at this thread you will see what we do http://www.breammaster.com/forum/sho...&threadid=1362 If you like PM madsurfe when he is next on line and he can tell you the technical stuff. I usually just do the painting with my favourite nailpolish. Also do a search as other guys have posted how they make theirs Cheers Mim

Hi I have made some jigheads at home and they turned out quite well aberdeens are a good hook and if you buy them in bulk it is cheaper the splitshot are the hard bit you must open them up a bit with a blunt knife is my way just make sure you are careful and do it on a bench and not in your hand or serious injury will be the result with the aberdeens I use two pair of pliers and bend them at 90 degrees cold if they snap just slow down the bending force a bit or dont make the bend radius so tight when you close the splitshot on them use a pair of multigrips opened up to the first notch this flattens out the side of the shot a bit but if you do it in one press this gives you a flat surface to glue on the wobbly eyes you get from the craft shop or paint them on with nail polish you will break a few of them but when you get a feel for it you will only break one or two from the whole packet I hope this has helped you if I get a bit of time I will try to post some pictures of the building process if you like

I tried out some of the heads I made today but found that 1. they sunk crooked and 'fluttered' 2. they didnt swim staight and I wasnt very happy with the action.
The only reason I can think of is if the jig wasn't symmetrically weighted.. but I made sure they were ok and still had slight problems. I followed the steps shown by you guys, except I used both sticky tape and mono instead of prongs, which were good as they didnt rip the plastic. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Below is what the jigs looked like: |
