Unhappy heavy steering

I was wandering if anyone could help me?
I have a Quintrex 440 hornet trophy and have just swapped the 40hp yammy that was on it to a 60 hp e-tec.
Since doing that i have noticed that the steering is very heavy.
Has anyone have any advise for me?

Hi Coastie,

Might want to help us out a bit, is it morse cable, hydraulic or an old wire pulley steering system.

Is it bad one way and not the other?

Or just heavy all the time?

Is it heavier when you are going slow or when you are flat out?

Is it a lot easier when the motor has revs on and is trimmed out?

It has cable steering.
and seems to be stiffer at different times, but it changes some times stiffer to the left other times stiffer to the right. it even gets stiff out of the water, on the trailer.
Do you think it is worth going hydraulic?

Cheers

Hydraulic is definitely the way to go but it is not a cheap change over. However once done there is no going back.

At a guess I would say that if you have a morse cable type steering system. Which is the one with a single plastic coated thick cable (Usually black or red plastic coating)
it is ready for replacement. They don't last for ever. By the sounds of yours if you look along it somewhere there will be a split in the coating which has let water in the cable letting the inner cable corrode and making it stiff.

Hope this helps.

i agree too about the split in cable,
it had happened to me too, i just replace the cable and
turn full direction one way so the cable is out far reach where the motor is and apply lots grease while the cable is not on the engine bracket hole, then as apply lots grease tight the cable on bracket with the grease full in it and turn the wheel the other direction to presure the grease in the cable, after all that i now have no problems,
cheers ben
