Choice of 30 HP 2 stroke
Gents,
Am in a position to repower my old Savage Gannet 4.2 m tinny. Currently have a 35hp Johnson (approx 1979 model) Am thinking a new 30hp 2 stroke forward steer would push nicely and my thinking has been so far: 1) Suzuki 30 2 stroke - approx $3300 fitted 2) Tohatsu 30 2 stroke - approx $3500 fitted 3) Mercury 30 2 stroke - approx $4000 fitted None of these havepower tilt and trim, but not really fussed with spending the extra to get that. After some thoughts from owners/mechanics on the pros and cons. ATM the Suzuki is a frontrunner because of the research and reviews I have found on the net. (and surprisingly is the cheapest!) Any input would be appreciated Cheers Luke |

I'm in the same position at the moment & I think the 3cyl Yammie is a best motor in the 30hp class.. It is bigger in CC's by 67cc.. which isn't much but with it being a 3cyl you would notice it plus it's smoother & quieter.. I won't shake you arm off like the tohatsu/merc will. I own 30hp Merc lighting aka Tohatsu & can say it's a reliable motor but it is rough on idle & shakes like no tomorrow.. |

Go Yama 3 cylinder. We've got one but slightly bigger 40 hp. Great motor. Again, had an old suzy before, never had a problem. There are more Yammies than Suzukis in the country-easier to get spare parts, readily available.

2 Stroke
I dont know how anyone can justify buying a 30hp 2 stroke - at least not after they know teh facts.
A 30hp 4 stroke will put out 200g of emissions per hour - about half a coffee cup. The 30hp carby 2 strokes will put out about 4kg of Hydrocarbons and Nitrous compounds. Think of that as a 3 litre bottle of milk and a 1 litre besude it. If you want the hards data I am hapy to supply - its from the USA EPA engine certification database. Gary

Well, what would you think of me if I had a 6 litre pack of used oil and nitric acid, tied over the side of my boat - with a pin hole in the bottom just large enough so it took an hour to run out.
So then I drive to and around our fishing spots letting this oil/acid drip out as I go along. Then what would you say to me? 'cause I reserve the right to say the same to someone who buys a 90hp 2 stroke - KNOWING the emission levels, because its the same effect as my leaking bottle. If you already bought one and didnt know - then I say no worries, because you didnt know. The Greens are closing down fishing all over Australia - and its attitudes like I hear from some people that prove we dont deserve to be allowed access to marine environments. Fools who leave their rubbish behind at camping areas or in the water will ruin it for all of us.

Well, Mr Fooks, I knew what I was buying when I got my motor. in this country it's my right to choose or pehaps you and your EGO friendly friends have perhaps forgotten that little detail.
You have your right to your opion, but that does not give you the right to try and ram it down everyone else throat when they don't go along with your choice. Next thing you know Santa will not be aloud to say HO HO ![]() Cheers Samurai

Obvously its not ok for you to have your bottle over the side, but not everyone can afford a 4 stroke or a high tech 2 stroke. For a lot of us it is a good ole 2 stroke or nothing. I am sure some of us compensate for our dirty 2 strokes in other ways. Personally, I ride my bike to work everyday.
Now tell me this, how can you sleep at night knowing that the 4 stroke you own pumps 200g of crap into the water every hour. Surely you could get the oars out. Each to their own mate. You make a good point, but in a bloody terrible way. Last edited by fats212; 05-12-2007 at 11:50 PM. |
