may not be the best looking unit, but tohatsu's are very very reliable.

or maybe a slight stretch to a 40hp e-tec if your transom will take it?

Isn't the max hp for 385 explorer only 25? Any higher you may have problems insuring the boat unless you officially get the transom reinforced? I may be wrong though....

I'm afraid I can't help you as I know nothing about boats, but I am sure a few of the younger ones on here can, a few of them have gone thru all this. And I think the Muddleduck (greenish dinghy) had the transom done. Muddleduck used to belong to Mim (MimboNo5) and JP (madsurfe). Do a search on these 2 names, and this boat IMO has a lot that one can get a few ideas from.

HTHs.

The 'ranger is right mate, 25 ponies max rating for the 385.

Very under rated brand the Tohatsu if you're in the market for a 2-stroke. Well worth a look at.

With the OEDA emissions star ratings out now fishers who actually care about the environment will have trouble sleeping with a carby 2 stroke on the transom.

If you already have one – fair enough - we didn’t know but now the data is available.

Just looking at a 15hp and zero star (famous US brand) has a rating of 323 g/kw/hr (HC+NOx)
A one star 15hp (famous jap brand) puts out 249.6 g/kw/hr (HC+NOx)
And a jap 4 stroke 3 star puts out 15.4

To explain what that means - multiply the rating by the kilowatts - so about 11kw (15hp) and the emission from the carby 2 strokes is 3.62 and 2.79 kg per hour.

That’s a standard test hour – not an hour flat out. It’s an iso 8178 test 10 minutes full power 10 mins 75% power etc ( I forget the details but it’s something like that) .

And the 3 star puts out less than 0.2 kg.

Think about the zero and one star putting out a 3 litre (3kg) bottle of milk full of nasty emissions. The 3 star puts out about ¼ of a coffee cup.

So.. If you do 100 hours a year your new 15hp carby 2 stroke will put out an EXTRA 280 kg of emissions into the water and the air,
No wonder they can no longer sell them in USA Europe and Canada. I heard from an Outboard company exec just back from China that they are banned from some Chinese lakes too.

This stuff is always unbelievable until you put the numbers on it. But- the numbers will stand any test except heads in sand

Tohatsu and Mercury 25, 30 and 40 Hp 2 stokes are one and the same engines and legs.

They are all made by Tohatsu for Mercury.....

Very reliable and will run for ever if looked after and serviced.

The 3 cylinder Yamaha as shown above is one of the smothest little engines you will ever get. Also with 3 cylinders the overall cubic capacity will be greater than a two cylinder so therefor you will get more bottom end power when boat is loaded.

Having said that its really a bit big for your little boat. But only just .

The 30hp 2 cylinder Yama is the same engine as the 25 2 cylinder so that would really be a saffer bet.
