Lightbulb Thong lure's (triple plugger popper's)?

g'day fella's again

to all u budding lure makers out there...like myself have u ever tried making surface poppers out of thongs (layed foam), i read a long time ago in a 'barra and bass with bream', mag that this guy had been doing it for years now and made it quite successfull ......it seems the greatest advantage with these guys is that they weight quite alot and still float.........there fore it's possible to trow them with light baitcaster gear....and thats exactly what this guy does........i think it makes scence due to surface bream'n requires accurate casts to close cover........bring the bait caster into it's own......also slightly better stump puller than a spinn stick in close cover(ei. american Bass anglers always use a baitcaster when 'flipping or pitching', heavy cover. . . . . lets face it a bream has alot of go in the first 5 to 10 m or so

just sum thought's

cheer's drew

You could always use a heavier rod and threadline reel to achieve the same stump-pulling effect. Step up to a medium weight spin rod of 6-7 feet and a 3000 size reel spooled with say 10 lb Fireline and hey presto. Note that threadline gear is starting to make inroads into the Barra comps now too.

The reason for the baitcasters is accuracy. The reason most breamers don't use them is because we're throwing such small baits for small-mouthed fish, which admittedly need pulling out of heavy cover ASAP, can't gulp down a rubber jig or a 5" Senko, two of the most popular flipped/pitched baits in the States. Believe me, I'd use a baitcaster if I could... I'm wondering if this little guy would help:

Hi Drew

The thong popper is an invention of a gentlemn in Coffs Harbour, NSW. there was a reciepe for it in a old version of modern fishing. The article went on that the thong popper is good because it is soft and can handle being banged around.

The article was suggesting a setup like peter said 7ft rod a reel of 2000 -3000 in size and fireline. Poppers are really like throwing handbrakes. They are aerodynamic and so your distances a considerabbly smaller. The creator of the thong popper uses a baitcast to throw his invention. I would use a treadline much easier to use and possible more distance.

i think it the weight of the popper that is the clincher also being made out of thong material it would be much lighter.

Cheers
Stuie

Hey chris

That little baitcaster is a beauty
It's called the liberto pixy (by Daiwa)

BUT...
It uses a magnesium frame and body
and so
no salt water use

Although u can use it in light salt
rinse it every session
and relube it again

It's not recommended by the daiwa
