Kayak Storage Problem

Hello,
I've recently bought a Kayak... but it's too small for fishing rods and tackle and all that stuff. I was wondering if I could build somthing on the side for tacking fish off, replacing traces, putting the rod down, a place to store the tackle box, ect. Has anyone done this? if so add: death.or.glory-@hotmail.com or just PM me with some instructions.

All I have ever brought with me on a kayak was a single rod, a bumbag full of tackle and maybe a small backpack with other essentials. The trick is to know your able to swim wearing it all.

The only things you will need in this situation is a paddle holder/leash and a rod holder.

I wouldn't recommend bringing much gear out with you. It is just messy, and will cost you more in replacement gear if/when you drop stuff/capsize etc.

Yeah... thats what I'll pretty much be taking, although the rod wont fit in my bag and I can't take fish off and put the rod in the water while I'm doing so

and where am I going to put my legals? sure as hell not in the bag lol.

yeah,

all you would need is a rod holder, which you should be able to install urself, and a backpack

Well you might want to start with a rod holder, which I already mentioned. You should be able to pick one up anywhere that sells canoes.

As for somewhere to keep your catch. I would just get a keeper net personally. But I personally don't often keep anything I catch from a yak.

I am actually looking for a new yak myself, got to get out more this bass season.

I made my Kayak, cost $150 in supplys. It's pretty simply.

Umm... ply wood, meshy stuff, fibre glass and this metal. My Metal Work teacher did all the fibreglassing, I just did some welding and made the body.

It took about a week, mostly because it felt kinda weird hanging out with my Metal Work teacher lol. Umm, glue and stuff had to set, so probbably 17 hours all up.

You will definitely need rod holders and the cheapest and easiest solution for them is to get a couple from a boat accessories store. You can get the cheap $5 ones (angled ones not straight ones) and then use the round saw things you use for drilling holes to install door locks. Drill that hole at the same angle as the rod holder and then put the rod holder through the yak and screw the holders to the yak with tapping screws. Those rod holders have a hole at the bottom which you might choose to seal up otherwise you might take in a bit of water. I install 2 rod holders per rod, one behind where I sit and one forward. The logic is when i paddle I want the rod out of the way (behind me) so the oars don't crash into the rod. When I'm fishing, the front rod holder is handy for rigging up, changing lures etc.

As for other bits, you really don't want to carry too much as you already have so little space and nowhere to go everything in one bum bag is all you'll really use. You could install a milk crate somewhere for storage, but you'll not use it too much because it requires sideways movement to get to it or stretching, 2 things you don't really want to do when trying to maintain a balance and not capsize.

Benefits of catch and release.

I only took a rod and a little tackle box went in the pocket in my kayak seat.

I put the rod between my legs when i landed and unhooked a fish. Later i put a rod holder in which was great then i could troll while moving to the spots.

Kayaking is a great way to get into breaming from a boat, i worked up from shorebashing, kayaking, a small leccy powered punt, 3.9m tinny and now up to purpose built bass boat imported from america. Its worthwhile starting off with a kayak to make sure your really into the sport then go from there.
