Your Goto SX40 colour...

Attention all you SX40 users... I know that all the colours work at one point or another, but if the going was tough and you had enough time to only properly work 2 colours at the most, what colour would you put on that would give you the most confidence?
The clarity of the water may affect your choice too, if it differs from clear water and dirty water, please include your choice colour/colours (2 max) for each.

My absolute go to colour is the 305 but normally in a 48. Also the 309 is great and for clear water the 310 is good as well as one of the others that I don't know the number for.

Cheers, Dror

I dont know, used to have a see throughy gold one. But it decided it wanted to be free during the Walpole comp and somehow got loose during a cast, and was the last it was seen.

For the amount $'s, it caused me too much heart ache.

I agree with Dror on this one but I prefer the SX40. Then again there isnt a colour in the range I havent caught fish on (and good ones at that)

Bought the 305 and lost it first cast at the last Classics! I bet it's still stuck on that huge log under water. Been meaning to go have a look and get it back but still can't figure out how! Still crying over it! It came highly recommended and I love the looks of it. Most expensive HB I've ever bought and it catches logs!

Theres no way you can go past the 'Gold Coast Special" .Work well in all situations ,be it clear or murky water . Come to think of it ,most of the sx40/48 range work . But there is always that comfort lure Go the special .

I find different colours work well in different locations. They all work well and I am trying not to have a favourite so I can't restrict myself.

Guppy goes on first 99% of the time and usually stays on the string.
Docklands tiger and forster are also top performers.

Go The Special

I've got one of 'The Specials' thats more beat up than all the others put together, that basically lives hanging from the tip of my BD crank. Having said that GCS is a number 1 go-to, if Im in really clear/shallow water, I like something like 307 or 302, or 303 in a little bit darker, tannin water.
What a silly thread
.....They're all go-to's

All the bloody colours work, whether I have confidence in them or not. If I had to choose two I'd go the Taree brown trout and the Clyde vampire. Natural see through colours that work in clear and murky water. These finishes also last a lot longer than alot of the others especially if they're bounced off structure. Many of the reflective finishes chip quite badly with the abuse I put them through, not that it stops them catching fish.

I'm the least creative bream angler I have ever met. 2 years ago Drewy showed me how to fish Hard body lures. Since that day I have been using that one session as the basis for every bream caught since.

I only had one ecogear on me at the time of our session. It was one I had waded out to retrieve when my plastic got snagged on the leader it was still attached to. The rock that had snagged the eco was the focus of my attention and the trailing leader that belonged to the unfortunate angler who lost the lure managed to pick up my lure aswell.

That was a week before I met up with Drewy and as it turns out - it was almost definately a lure Drewy had lost the week before that. (for the record I offered to give it back but he wouldnt accept) and I'm eternally grateful - not only for the selfless act but also for the lesson that lure helped to teach.

Gold Coast Special was its name.

In the session we had, I was using halco scorpians because thats what the mags said was the hot lure. I'd had very limited experience with Hb's at the time and was only starting to hit my straps on plastics.

Drew set about taking 5 bream on his first 5 casts to the same spot. A feat I'd never come close to emulating or even witnessing with my own eyes. He continued along at a similar pace while I cast and retreived for no result.

Half way through the session I snagged my scorpian and Drewy offered me one of his lures. I said I had one similar to the one he was using in my tackle box and it was then (after I told him the story of how I came to be in posession of the lure) that we worked out it was probably one of his.

I'd watched him loose 3 eco's in the space of about 500m (for 12 bream landed ) so his suggestion that i tie it on was a mixture of surprise, admiration and general warm fuzzies.

The second the Gold Coast special hit the water was the single most pivotal moment of my breaming career to date. I went on to land three bream in 3 casts, and the 4th cast ended with a buzzing drag and a bust off.

Drewy then insisted I tie on one of his "spare" eco's but I declined coz at that stage - loosing 1 eco (let alone a total of 4) was something beyond my comprehension. Who spends $20 on a lure for Cry-sake. (A few months prior I was catching plenty of good fish for the cost of a few bait hook's)

But from that day on, I knew HB's were the lure for me. Work em fast, cover the ground and wait for that big dirty smash and grab hit when the bream lays the smack down on a SX40F.

That said - there are other anglers that have been pivotal along the way but none that have had the impact Drew and his sx40's had.

I've strayed from the point of the post and here is where I answer the question that was originally asked.

A leopard doesnt change its spots and neither do the bait fish the bream prey upon. If you take note of the bait fish in a system you notice the sx40 doesnt look exactly like any of them.

The bait is either skinnier, fatter, longer, shorter, etc, etc,

That said - I'm a firm believer in colours to a certain extent. Metallic reflective sx40's are all I tie on no matter how clear or dirty the water is. When ever I see an injured bait fish - whether it be from under the water (mask and snorkel) or above. The metallic flash is the thing that catches my eye.

I've conducted some sadistic experiments in my spear fishing days and "The weak shall be bashed" is a concept that is alive and well in the natural world.

A bully that could easily take down 20 jueveniles of another species in a day must not show any form of weakness. The supreme hunter I'm refering to was torn apart in a minute by a school of 20 fish which would usually jump onto dry rock to get out of this monsters way.

A metalic flash underwater can mean a few different things from my point of view as a predator( remember the mask and snorkel)

Number one - the fish you are chasing is comfortable enough to feed in your company. Ie - he has seen you and doesnt care - or he hasnt seen you. (either scenario is very handy)

Number 2 - the fish is in serious trouble and is spasming with the death rattles on the surface.

What I'm trying to say is an indiscriminate metallic flash indicates weakness or a lapse of judgement under the water. Either way - its the flash that sticks out and grabs your attention.

Very well said Lawrence!

I to dont have a go-to colour. I have caught fish on most of the colours.

Hey Lawrence have you seen Drewy's sx-40 range of late? I dont think hes going to be running out in a hurry...

cheers, Nathan
