Winter Bream

Hi all,

From my bait fishing observations, during the Melbourne Autumn/Winter, bream are harder to get but the quality of fish is much better. This is particularly the case towards the end of winter coming in to early spring.

Now that the water temperatures are beginning to drop and is likely to become discoloured through more frequent rains (we hope!!!), does this have any sort of effect on a bream's willingness to hit a lure.

Is lure fishing still a viable option suring the colder month's or should I simply rack the lure rods and dust off the bait gear.

your thoughts??

No way do you need to go to the extremes of bait fishing! Lures are still a viable option; especially plastics as I've found this more subtle approach suits the apparently more sluggish but wary nature of the fish in the colder months.

Thanks Chris, I won't take out my bait gear just yet!!!

On the Patterson River where I live, the water discolours very quickly and I'm not even sure if the fish stick around when this happens or if they move out into Port Philip Bay.

What about lure colour for winter waters...is this important..I've caught fish on both natural and bright coloured lures in summer. Does a more subtle approach also mean more subtle lure colour?

cheers.
