4.1 Polycraft open boat owners

I am after the opinions of other 4.1 Polycraft tiller steer open boat owners and also any other tiller steer owners in regards to hydrofoils on their outboards. I have had conflicting information in regards to if they work. Some say the work, some say they don’t and others say they make the boat twitchy and dangerous to handle at speed?

I have a Yamaha 30hp 3cyl on the back of a 4.1 and was thinking of changing the prop to give it that little bit better pull out of the hole and spoke to Solas who advised firstly putting on their small S/Steel laser foil “A” before looking at changing props.

What do you think?

Nick my 4.1 has a 40 on it and even though it gets out of the hole not to bad I am going to be putting a foil on mine. A lot of my mates have foils on their boats to help with getting them up onto the plane quicker and none have had any dramas.

Cheers
Ozzy

I never had a foil on the poly - but I did have a 50 Yammy on the back

I think I've said it before, but my humble opinion is a 30HP is not quite enough grunt for a fully loaded 4.1.

Having said that, I do have an almost new (used for one day) Solas Stainless Prop to suit a Yammy for sale if you're interested - shoot me a PM and I'll get the dimensions, it's in the shed right now and I can't quite remember them exactly.

I have a foil fitted to the 3 cyl Merc 40 on my hornet.
It definately stops my boat porposing at top speed when I'm out by myself and definitely helps get her out of the hole with just me aboard (I'm HEAVY!!). I haven't seen any adverse handling problems as yet and have been out on some not so pleasant days, where the foil seems to help reduce the usual tinny bang into chop a little.

My boat tops out at 35 knots with 1 pob.
