More Power !
Gday All,
Im getting myself a bigger boat....well much bigger and heavier than I have now and I'm wondering what the most powerful leccy you can get is. Its a 5.5m boat made out of 5mm and 4mm plate ally and its pretty dam heavy, definatly to heavy for a servo driven 55lb thrust kota. What are my options ? Thanks in advance Tim. |

Not really too fazed, just want the most powerful one I can get. I have to admit I'm not a massive fan of cable steer but to push this boat around effectively I think the resposivness of cable steer will be needed.

They do an 80lb Riptide in the US. I don't know if it is available here as yet. 74lbs looks like the max if you want a foot pedal set up from Minn Kota. Bow mount tiller steer units in the US go up to 101lbs
Good luck.Regards Dave

Gday Tim,
Mate if you have a look at the motorguide website they do a 100lb+ leccy. This should handle the job. Chris |

Hey Tim, my dad has a 5.3 meter boat that i use a 55lb Minnkota on. it does ok with it though wind is a major hold back. i recon an 80lb would be perfict for what you are putting it on.

Yeah Tim 80LB is the biggest Minn Kota make.
And it has heaps of power, as said it pulls Leon's Pro strike all over the place with ease. It is however 24 volt so factor the extra battery in to the $$$ equation. Boat looks good, cant weight to hear how she goes... |

Minn Kota do make a 101lb thrust motor in the Maxxum and the tiller steer Riptide but they are not sold here in Aus. You could probably import one from the US but they also are 36volt so you now need 3 batteries.
I use the 74lb Riptide on the front of the Full Boar and it weighs over a ton. From what Leon has said the 80 is noticably better. It really depends on how high the sides of the boat are as the wind is probably the biggest influence on the performance. Cheers, Dror

Thanks for the replies guys.
Rod, 24v not a problem......I wanna get it right first time so while money is still an issue I dont wanna sacrifice performance for the sake of a few $$$ Dror, Yea it's a fairly high sided boat so the wind will be an issue. I think the 80lb kota sounds like the go, I was talking to bigfella and it seems the cable (on a cable steer model) may have trouble reaching over the sides. |
