river 2 sea bubble pop 35 (Popper)
When you retrieve bubble pop's how do you usually do it.
Do you do a single bloop or a double? Do you leave a pause or just continuously bloop it? If you pause - it it closer to 1 second - 5 secs - or 10 secs? I've only used them twice and so far I am flying blind. The bream I have got (3) have been hitting at all stages of the retrieve but the positive hook ups have been on the pause. Oh yeh - and do trout and redfin like them. |

Ive fished them for blacks on the SouthWest coast and have found an ultra slow retrieve with heaps of pauses has worked best for me, with small bloops in lots of one or two.
I love watching the try to belt it on the pause. Pauses were anywhere from 5 -10seconds I would guess. Not much help I guess, Dave |

Nah thats exactly what I was after - thanks mate.
The bloops I've been doing are quite short and sharp. I'll give the more subtle approach a go - thanks |

Nothing but bad news I'm afraid...
Sorry Lawrence, but it's just one of those things.
Especially when using surface lures, it's a matter of interacting with the fish. It varies so often. Even with the archers here, which are likely a LOT more aggressive than bream, some days they like to sip it down on the pause, others, they'll charge out to belt it during a high frequency blooping retrieve. Personally though, I think this one ought to work: Cast it out and let it sit for a little bit. IF there aren't any near it, bloop it once. Pause, again, it's up to you how long. Bloop twice if there are no inquiries etc. The bloop just gets their attention really. Still, the 'twitch' has often worked better for me than the bloop. Just enough to get that flat face pushing water out in front of it. Fish can feel that plenty well. Anyway, hope this helps in some small way. Owen

Re: Nothing but bad news I'm afraid...
Thanks Owen
I've got very little idea on how it is suppossed to be done for bream - my retrieve was based on a trevally poppering session that I had seen on telly so every bit helps - I especially like the twitch idea - ta Last edited by yellow door 1; 22-02-2006 at 09:28 AM. |

No probs Lawrence.
Ted taught me all I know about surface-luring, so I'm only giving you secondhand information. Ironically, I still haven't caught a trevor on a popper yet. It'll happen, I swear!!! Caught 'em on walkers and fizzers, but not poppers... Good luck with it though, try everything, you just never know.

Yeh I might be giving the trout and reddies a go at it tommorrow so I'll let you know how I go.
As for the trevors - as long as you're getting them on the surface - its all good

yeh reddies like them, havent managed to hookup but had plenty of missed strikes, firstly found the fish then just cast it near where they were and blooped it once or twice at the beggining of the retrieve then just retrieved it dead slow with a few pauses, they always manage to take it on slack line though havent perfected the surface hookup yet.
where abouts are you trying for reddies, ive noticed most redfin come from the bank so if the banks drop off enough try casting parrelel with the bank cheers luke |

I was going to go to roweville lakes but I cant be stuffed.
I'll give it a go soon though. Thanks for the tips on the reddies - I spend a fair bit of time working the banks aswell. |

Luke,
When striking a surface hitting fish, the secret is to wait till it turns. In this case, a little slack line's a good thing. If you strike it while it's still facing you, you'll often just pop the lure out of their mouths. Either don't strike, or strike late, you'll secure a lot more fish that way. Owen

Personally I'd lose the feather for the bream, I recon alot more of the pickers (lil' tackers)...(and some goodn's for that matter) will get snagged a bit easier without it.
As said, a slow bloop's the go for the bream, ... a bit of variation,.... but i recon slow and low, is the tempo. I also find when an area has been worked well with the pop', and you know thier there, wack a HB through it. More often than not, the pop's teased them and the crank'll get'em

Yeh I've trimmed them back this far - do you reckon I should get rid of them all together

The feather does add to boyancy etc.. as it's sitting, floats the ass end up a touch, but it doesn't do a hell of alot to the bloop action.
Without it, the ass hangs down a tad more on the stop, inviting fish a little hesitant to breach. If thier gunna' have a pick, the back of the lure is a hook, not a feather. Not to say with the feather won't catch'em, just less confusion where the end of the bait is for the frustrating pickers. |

Alright - I'm taking them back this far and thats it
- I still like the idea of a bit of hook camoflauge on the pause.

i looked at some of these the other day and had the same thought about the feathers how it might work better with out them
