How to stop trebles rusting

Any thoughts on how to stop trebles rusting? Besides rinsing in freshwater and drying them thoroughly.....this humidity is causing a bit of rust on my trebles.

I've not tried this personally, but I've seen people say cooking oil is ok. It stops rust and doesn't make a smell that could put fish off.
I reckon lures are designed to self destruct, use them once and they rust away in the tackle box (if you didn't snag and lose it already).

a mate of mine uses lures of the beach/rock etc and hes started to use the treble protectors that you can buy & putting fish oil in them and putting them back on.last time we were away he was even talking of putting "captain gordons chumline" in them.they seem to be holding up ok even though they are just the cheap trebles that the lures come with.i dont know if you can get treble protectors for size 10 or 12s but might be worth a look.cheers

I know you said OTHER than washing in freshwater and drying ... anyway this is what I do, it might help someone. During a trip the lures I use never go straight back in the tackle box. I'll store them in a seperate container until I get home, then wash them in fresh water, allow to dry, then they go back in the tackle box. This way there should almost be no salt residue in my tackle box....other than the salt impregnated softies, but I'm not sure they count, I keep them in their packets most of the time anyway.

Gidday Lizard Boy,

Thats exactly what I do....I have a special container in the boat that I put the used HB's in. Wash in freshwater (really well) air dry them on a towel then stow them back in the plano. I think its the humidity thats doing it.

I should never have taken the squidgies out of the bags they came in and put them in the plano, I just had a look at them and they are "sweating" with a wet sheen and all the salt crystals are very wet and the plano compartments are even wet, they must have soaked up the moisture in the air.
I'll have to put them in some ziplock bags, I bought some a few weeks ago but have been slack and never got around to it. To much time on Breammaster

Hey Jim, I just openned my tqckle box this morning to work on some lures. I found the same thing in my plano, caused by the damn squidgy's. There is salt and small drops of water, all over the top of my plano box. I wish i'd heard of this before i took them out of their packet!

Just an idea, I haven't tried it, but...

You can now buy Olive oil with garlic in it. I have been reading about using all the scents in the other forums and thought maybe it would stop the rusting and add a nice garlic scent to the lure at the same time

Cheers

I remember reading somewhere of using tuna oil in a spray bottle and giving the hooks a squirt when you finish fishing for the day. I haven't tried this but sounds like a good idea. I keep my soft placcies and hard bodies in seperate boxes also so that would prevent the moisture rusting the hooks like is happening to you. I'm not having any probs with rusting hooks and i don't spray anything on them.

Rice, in the plano box - I have seen it only once before, and the lures and hooks had the least amount of rust Ive ever seen.
