the rules

The Swapmaster decides a theme, closing date and max no of participants eg Barra Flies, 15 March and max of 4 participants

Each individual nominates on the post for the flyswap saying what they will tie.

4 participants (A,B,C & D)

A (who is also the swapmaster) decides to tie a clouser

B decides to tie a pink thing

C decides to tie a deceiver

D decides to tie a bush pig

All of them tie 4 of their fly and send to the swapmaster.

The swapmaster sends back to each one each of the flies that they did not tie eg C gets a clouser, a pink thing and a bush pig. The extra fly left over is for the swapmaster. In this case the swapmaster is also a participant so he gets 2. The swapmaster does not have to be a participant (and in that case only gets one of each fly).

When sending your flies to the swapmaster it is vital that you pack your flies correctly, label them including tying instructions and importantly ensure you send a stamped self addressed envelope so your flies can be returned to you. Make sure the packaging you send is going to be sufficient to return the swapped flies. Buying express post or parcel post bags seems to be the best way to send and receive the packages.

When you have sent your package off to arrive by the due date place a picture of your fly (if you can) and the tying instructions into the Fly Database (if it’s not already there). If you need a picture taken of the fly ask someone else in the swap to do it for you.

If everyone has done the right thing and got their flies off by the due date the swapmaster should be able to package the flies for return within about 2 weeks where you can kiss your postie, unwrap your package and go fishing.

If you have any problems along the way (eg struggling to get them completed on time) just contact your swapmaster and have a chat.

Don’t be afraid to put your hand up to become a swapmaster either.

Flyswaps are a great way to learn to tie and get new ideas from others. Next time you see one starting – jump on board

Hi Gav
It would be great to have you as swap meister. Once we've got a full compliment of tiers you should set a deadline for the flies to be tied and in the post to you. And your address to send them to wouldn't hurt either :-)
thanks for putting your hand up!

I will make one of me favourite patterns. A baitfish profile so call it something like "Bennos BreamBaitFish!

This is cool - bring it on.

Cheers lads

l little of topic but since gav mentioned the rainbow on a fuzzel story.....

its often said that catching your first fish on fly is a feeling only toped by cathing one on a fly you've tied yourself. well on thursday i found somthing which topped it again!

to be able to see a mate pick up his first out fit, then help him get to the point where he can throw a half decent loop, whip him up a few flies, and be the to watch him hook and land his fist fish on a pattern you tied for him ...... man thats hard to top!!

somtimes the buzz is more that just catching fish!

and buggerd if i kown why a 3 pounder wanted a bream fly! but i'm not going to argue, and i certainly wont be shy about mixing up the patterns i use in the future

Hey Brad,

I don't know that a certain pattern for bream couldn't work on a trout. I can't say I've seen the fly in question, but a lot of the time, I think that both lures and flies just offer strike cues, they just trigger something instinctive in the fish, and they hit it accordingly.
