Van Staal reels

I took a peek into the US websites and came across what looks like a very interesting find. You know how slick those saltwater Large arbour fly reels are with the holes in them and they're constructed such that they can be dunked in saltwater without doing too much damage? Well, Van Staal has them in spinning reels and they can be fully dunked and looks like an extension of these "mag wheels" fly reels. Downside is they cost more than a Stella, but boy, do they look good!

They look like they belong in the museum but it is sure to turn heads, that reel. I sort of suggested I might get that reel to my wife and she let out a sarcastic laugh... Maybe my timing wasn't good, especially after I'd just gotten a Certate... I'll keep dreaming.. Dream, dream dream dream, when I want you, in my HANDS, whenever I want you all I have to do is dream, dream dream dream...

They certainly are a great looking reel. There is a dealer in WA now for them. They used to make a giant spinning reel that held something like 500 or 600 yards of 80lb MONO but it is not listed on their website anymore. The other models are reasonably priced when compared to the Stella's and Saltiga's. I think it would take some getting used to though, not having a bail arm. I'm going to have a look at one in the flesh anyway, just so I can have a drool.

Cheers, Dror

Found it. It's the VS400. Not listed on the Van Staal website anymore but some of the dealers must still have some. Holds 800yards of 80lb. Doesn't have a price but a spare spool is $375US so I guess the whole reel is pretty pricey.
Oh and I forgot to add, it's a lever drag spinning reel and weighs about 1.5kg.

I'd like to know the physical size of the smaller models - Imagine having 5 of them hanging off the Bream Busters

You have to specify when you order if you want left or right hand wind, and the prices rec retail aus dollars goes like this
VS 300 $1199-00 (largest)
VS 100 L/H only $979-00 (smallest)

Holds 225m of 10lb mono
Has a gear Ratio of 4.75:1
And weighs 11oz

So Dave might be a bit on the big side!
