Capricorn vs Strudic

Hi all,

at the moment i have a new rod being built and as we all know and accept a new rod needs a new reel as well.

I'm tossing up between the Daiwa Capricorn and The Shimano Strudic. bot seem in the right price range for me and i believe they would be of similar quality so .......... which would you pick...

Hi Brad, I cast my vote the Stradics way, I reckon they are both excellent reels, you could not go wrong either way, the Daiwa probably has a slightly more powerful drag, but the stradics lightness and smaller phycical dimensions would sway me.

Brad, that is a hard choice. I have had both and they both have their good and bad points. The Stradic is more compact and is lighter but I like the larger spool diameter of the Capricorn and also the drag on the Capricorn. Both are pretty smooth reels and would serve you well. I think you are most likely to find that more people would like the Stradic than the Capricorn though. If I had to choose I would probably take the Stradic but probably in the 2500 size. It is heavier but the larger spool gives less trouble with wind knots and casts better. I just find the 1000 spool size is too small, hence why I am changing all my reels to 2500 size.

Cheers, Dror

Fishing gear in general I feel is a pretty personal thing, what you like someone else may not, and just because you hear someone else's opinion doesn't mean you should follow suit. My personal opinion is that i prefer the Capricorn, for similar reasons that Dror pointed out. I have owned a Stradic 1000 and sold it because I prefered the Capricorn 1500 and kept going for that reel over the other. I would probably suggest that you wait until the rod is finished and attach both reels and see which one balances the rod better, there are many guys that will gladly lend you a reel to fish with, you can borrow one of my Capricorn's if you want. What blank, butt length, guides and reel seat you use on the rod will also help determine what reel suits better as well. I recently bought a Quantem Energy reel from the USA, size of a stradic although a bit heavier, 10bb, sweet reel. Due to spoofiness of the colour and the fact it is my newest reel it is currently my go to reel (I will take a photo and post if you want). Enough waffle from me. If you want to borrow a Capricorn let me know before the Breamers day and I will bring it down for you. BTW what blank are you getting built up???

Yeah stradics are awesome little reels mate. Get one! Because I can assure that you'll get your moneys worth with these top quality little reels.

Iv'e had mine for about a month and I love it! Pulled off big flatties, a big bream, pinkie's and more...Handles the job very easily.
I run 4lb fireline on mine and it's a perfect fit for my rod (Strudwick SicStik).

As for the Daiwa capricorn's, they are also great reels, although I have found them a little heavy for some rod's in particular...If you happen to one of these, I would suggest you buy the 2000 size, as it has the same body as the 1500 model and a larger spool. The only difference.
As already metioned, the capricorn is slightly heavier than the stradic, but it all comes down to what rod you are matching it to and how you like it. Personal preference mate.

Cheers BB. good advise i reckon, once its built i'll hopefully try out both and then make up my mind.

i'm building a Samuri S006 7' 1 piece. hopfully it will work out well. shes getting the recoil guides and St Croix handle. should be a major improvment over the old daiwa fire fox i'm using now ... talk about a noodle, limper than wet sapgetti.

no stress about bringing the Cap to the breamers day as the rod wont be ready for a while, i may get intouch once its finished though.

Does it have to be a Stradic or a Capi??? I just recently bought a Penn Affinity 1000 for around the $150 mark and I am stoked with it. I think these are a fair bit cheaper without a hell of a lot of quality sacrificed. Might be worth a look.

Maybe Dror and some of the more experienced guys can shed more light on how this reel stands up.

JMO

Happy shopping

Peter

Peter N - not nec fixed on the Cap or Stradic just the 2 i have been looking at.

Conehead - the weight may be a big factor as with the re-coil guides i dont reckon there will be much more weight at the tip other than the blank itself. theres that word again .... balance!

BB / Tim - may have another contender in the quamtum ... flash or what.

Fisho - have had a look at e-bay. i'm still trying to stick to the buy local thing, but those prices are hard to go past. but you never know about the duty i guess like bear posted up late last week.

Peter, I had a look at the Penn Affinity when they first came out and it felt like a great little reel. However I have not actually fished with one so it's a bit hard to give an accurate comment on them. Everyone I have spoken to who has one have been very happy with them.
Like BB has said, it is a personal thing as to which reel suits you. I am not a fan of the smaller 1000 size reels but others would not use anything else.
Brad I have two Capricorns that I am trying to sell if you are interested in going that way. I did have a Stradic for sale aswell but it got snapped up pretty quickly.

Cheers, Dror
