Do You Lie???
Hey,
The other day I was havin a bit of a spin and was doing pretty good , trouble was, I was right out in the open where all could see if i caught a fish or not. So I basically had people coming up and asking me what I was catching and what lure(or what's that thing???)I was using...... I actually found myself lying about the number of fish I had caught as to not draw attention to the spot!!!!!! Knee jerk reaction??? I was wondering if I was the only guy who kinda plays down the fish to the point of lying and saying "i've caught nothing"to avoid potential fishing pressure it may add to your favorite spot or what?? thanks,

You arent the only one Kris! I have done it on many occasions. The best thing about catch and release is the people never see any fish apart from those they witness you catching! Everytime I leave my fav place and I see someone else, I always say, not many there today! It is not lying, it is protection of your own fav place!!!

Yep
The Kalgan has stuff all big bream in it.
Well that's what I tell most people as there is enough fishing preasure in there as it is. When a report comes out in the paper about mulloway , every man in his dog goes down there. Keep the deception about the good spots going or the big fish will get eaten Happy fishing Ben Scott |

Ben,
Fishing mags and papers have been doing that sort of thing for years. It's not going to change. The big thing is teaching people better practises. This forum and the ABT comps are a great teaching platform. It's something that needs to be taught to everyone. Another thing that NEEDS to happen more is a more public face to our fisheries people. Fishos can't do the job by themselves.

Fisheries
Bear ,
All my life fishing and I have never seen one fisheries inspector. I think Albany has a couple of them but they go out in the boat and only check the boat's on the weakends. Fish Hard Ben Scott |

Bear,
I def. have to agree with you ................whilst I was fishing and this happens ALL the time, three seperate groups of anglers were catching and putting every single bream (including a mulloway maybe.. 30cm) into their dinner nets.............. Not to be presumptious but i bet they had no licence either I personally get a little disheartened when I see this............. I have a licence,I play by the rules, these guys don't give a S*** I have NEVER EVER seen what a fisheries officer looks like let alone been asked to produce a licenece..... brings me down man........... oh well, we can only stay on the current course of trying to educate the masses i guess, thanks

Yeah,
i and others i fish with have been known to do it. I remember one session where i caught 5 bream in under half an hour (shore based), and when asked how it was going, i simply stated that there was nothing but blowies around. If the person had bothered to have a good look, he'd have seen about 50 bream rooling and feeding all around us!!! Dave |

Kris,
Buckets full of undersize fish is a pretty common thing along the river. I have tried telling a few people that there is actually a size limit on bream but very few if any seem to care.If anyone asks about the fishing i just tell them it's been pretty quiet and if they see me pull a fish it's the first one or i have only caught a couple. It would be good to see a fisheries inspector once every 4 or 5 years but it's not likely to happen anytime soon. Brian |

Guys,
There has been a lot of talk about licenses in WA. How do you find them in the east and do you think it's worth it?? I personally think it going to take a little more than a license to fix things here. I believe the fisheries and other groups need to install a bit more public confidence b4 they go trying other things of us. We already pay a license for marron, inland fisheries (trout etc), crayfish and netting. It hasn't done any good yet.

perhaps they should deputise some of us normal, bag and size limit abideing, catch and release fisho's to inspect others on their behalf.

That's part of the problem hey Mick.
The thing that annoys me the most is that they don't have to go very far to grab a few cheats. Those guys on Garret rd and a few other places are often there with more than the legal bag. Richo and I have also hassled a few guys throwing nets around. Richo had his car pelted with fish by some guys who took badly to him reminding them of the netting laws in the Swan.

Bear,
It hasn't done any good yet and probably isn't likely to. The only thing that seems to have changed in victoria since the all waters license was introduced is some new signs telling us where we can't fish anymore(marine parks). It would be nice to hear of something positive coming out of the licenses but there has been very little so far. An increase in fisheries insprectors would be a start. Brian |

ive been fishing for 25 years and i have NEVER seen an inspector
requiring a license for all waters will only work if people are checked for size/bag limits regulary. im hoping i get asked, just so i can show it off ![]() ![]() whats everyones thought on a test to gain your license instead of just handing over your bucks??

Isn't that taking the last fun we have out of fishing Pete?
To me, by having the license, it's up to you to know the rules. It's not as if we're driving something. I agree something needs to be done, but not by fishos. We're the ones who always seem to be left in the lurch. About time we saw our monies going to better use.

pete, good idea but the problem is, there is nothing that can override those individual's greed and no education can help that. (brain-washing maybe? torture.... hmmm.... torture!!!)
i do admit i am a taker sometimes (when my partner wants some fresh bream for steaming) but i do hate to see people taking undersize fish or just keeping EVERYTHING they catch and as kris said 'stuffing their freezers full of years' supply of fish' looks like i should also lie about the quantity of fish around as well.... never thought of that! |
