stupid question. what is a leader?

what is a leader? is that the same as a "trace?" what is the purpose of a leader?

A leader is the same as a trace.
The purpose is to present the lure more naturally. Flourocarbon has a very similar refractive index to water ans as such is almost invisible when submerged. It's also tougher than standard mono.
