New Leader

Hi all,
Just wondering what you all think I should try.
I have been using 10lb Vanish (not the leader stuff) and am not that happy with it.
I am thinking of trying out the Yamatoyo ''Super'' or whatever it is called.
I fish really snaggy areas such as racks and rock walls etc. and also regularly go after flatties as well....
What breaking strain should I get???

what don't you like about the vanish? I use it and am quite pleased as it is relatively cheap and works for me. I use 4 & 6lb most of the time and occasionaly go up to 8lb

Judging by the comments of some of the boys who came back from the Nationals Over east , you do require a heavier leader while fishing in those racks.

Mister B. Destroyer, I would send a PM to guys like Dave W, Zeeke, Billfish and Ravin, as most of us W.A. guys have yet to see structure like you are fishing. We can pull bloody big fish on our light leader's but i reckon in those leases we'd come home crying with our tails between our legs.

JP, I used the 4lb vanish for a while, before switching to the Yamatoyo stuff that BM sells. While the vanish isn't as bad as some people say ( I never had any knot problems like some people seem to), the Yamatoyo is in a different class.

I found the abraision resistance on the vanish to be fairly bad, meaning I needed to replace the leader after even minor encounters with trees and pylons (from bad casting - not fish). However, the Yamatoyo is like steel by comparison. You can drag it into and out of some very nasty looking places and it will come out without a scratch. Knot strength and suppleness are also excellent, but for mine, the abraision resistance is key when bream fishing.

BreamDestroyer, even if you are fishing in snaggy areas you could get by with as light as 6lb with this stuff. It's probably worth getting a few spools up to say 14lb to cover all the bases though. I'd go 6, 10 and 14lb if you have the money.

I was just wondering what was causing grief with the Vanish. I've used Platil Ghost and Stren Magnathin which were not to my liking on abrasion and settled for the Vanish which ties nicely for me and yes it does scuff up but I'm yet to break it with a fish on even after scuffing, Ghost cost me 4 fish in the Franklin down at Walpole on the Sat of the comp' due to pinging on snag branches, the ruddy bream didn't even have to wrap me around it, just rub me against it. I changed to Powerline and then landed a Bream without getting busted from abrasion in the sticks.

Mitch likes Ghost so I gave him what I had left when we were at Carnarvon.

I have heard that the Yamatoyo is good but won't try it until I use up my 6 spools of Vanish. I choose my leader on diameter as opposed to lb rating. i.e. 4lb vanish is .18mm , 10lb vanish is .28mm thats a huge upgrade in diameter, some other flouro leaders may be rated at 6 lb at that diameter. I then think about strength as being relative to the thickness of the line. The thicker line will take more abuse.

Hi JP, yep, I agree with you on the Ghost. That stuff is crap. The powerline you mentioned is good, although I've heard of problems with the newer batches?

Ok yes, so the Yamatoyo will break if you drag it over mussels all day, but I have wrapped it around a few pylons and it has come out better than most other lines would. Also after snagging up in trees you can rip it quite hard before you will damage it.

What I was trying to illustrate is that it is bloody tough compared to most other leaders I've tried (Vanish, powerline, ghost, cortland precision 2 and penn 10x).

But you're right, we should let BD tell us what he doesn't like about vanish.

The "Vanish" seems a little too soft, and abrasion resistance is a problem. However, my mate uses the Vanish leader material, and said it is a much harder material and handles getting flogged around racks etc much better.
I just want to try something different, and the Yamatoyo sounds like a good and reliable option.

I have been using Yamatoyo since it became available & in knot strength & abrasion resistance in my opinion its head & shoulders above the rest. I tried many & they didn't come close.

I have found around really nasty structure some fish are going to do you no matter what & for me I have found its the way I fish & how quick I react on hooking up whether I get done or not. I fish really heavy drag & just bulldoze them out as soon as they are hooked. Some you win some you lose.

You MUST be concentrating & ready to react quick smart.
