Looking for light bream rod
Hey
Okay...Now we have a break from school I want to go get myself a proper breamin flick stick. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that costs around $70? Of course it wont be a high end rod and I'd be happy with anything really thats half decent. My old rod was a 10 year old wooden flick rod and it was sweet...but so weak it'd wrap itself aroudn the jetty and so insensitive you couldnt' feel whiting bites ![]() I rang up a tacklestore nearby and they suggested a silstar powertip at $75. I dont know about this rod is it any good? Are there anydecent graphite rods that u guys would recommend at this price range? Thanks

Torvic,
I use a shakespear synergy $59, they will cast hb and sp's reasonably well. It is reasonably sensitive and graphite IM6. I do have a couple of issues with it like the warranty is worthless. However for under 70 dollars it is a pretty reasonable rod. Mine is matched to a Diawa Regal X 1500 using 6lb fireline. 4lb would be better. Petty much everywhere carries them I have seen them in BM shop also. |

Spend $30 more. You won't regret it. There are a lot of rods out there from Daiwa (Procaster), Shimano (Stella, Squidgy) and others that will do the job alot better than a $70 rod. Yes the Synergy will do the trick, but you'll get a better rod overall if you hit the $100 mark.
First step is to check in to Bream Master shop and have a look at the range there.

Light Bream rod
Torvic, see if you can get your hands on a Surecatch Microlight model no. ML601SP. IM8 graphite. I have matched mine with the smallest Mitchell spin reel and it is fantastic......great balance and as light as a feather.
I picked up the rod for about $75 and the reel for $50. Pulled some bream last weekend with it. No need to spend heaps. Bubble.

Forgot to mention.....
The rod also has cork grips.....
Mitchell is a 308X, 5 bearings, aluminium spool and comes with a spare plastic spool which I have spooled with 1kg mono. Extra finesse, a tip I got of Steve Starling. Bubble

Ahhh if I didnt spend my birthday money I'd have enough to buy a stella or squidgy...Was looking to get one of those actually. Anyway, on to things that I can afford... Have many of you tried the new prawnstar shrimp? I'v heard of some guys catching bream on them, what colour do ya reckon gives you the best chance at nailing these buggers?

an inivator light is a lil more expensive ,but a great rod by shogun and american rod company (basicly scientific angler) i think there around $150 mark with a 5 year un-conditional warrenty ....... thats pretty good if u break i have 1 and i snaped the tip off in the car door , brand new one in 2weeks ...........(just had to pay $8 postage) thats sumthing u need to think about.........
other wise i suggest the wilson micro light at $80, or lightning ........around $150 make u're own rod over the holiday's with a samuria blank or sumthing,.... cheer's drew |

Hey Drew,
I saw those shogun rods in a local tackle shop. They are a really nice looking rod. I would appreciate a few details on how do you find them for casting Hb and Sp's. Also what kind of pulling power they have. I really liked both the look and feel of the rod, was comparing it with Diawa heartland (not worried about the small price difference). Seriously thinking about a shogan as my next rod |

I picked up a Penn Power Graph (1.79m) 6001 SPLM for $70. It is ultra light with cork grips and is great for flicking HB's & SP into tight places. The only draw back is that it loads up about half the rod when you hook something decent which, according to rod designer's is not optimal! The better rods load up the first third which means the rod fights the fish like it was designed to do instead of you having to battle the rod and the fish!
In saying that I'm real happy with mine and I will upgrade at some point but as a starter you are probably better off not over spending! That's my opinion !Herds |
