I know these choices are highly reliant on the spot you fish, the stage of tide and the size of fish you plan to encounter. (I did type out an enormous list then figured noone could be stuffed answering every detail)

So I've just picked the 6 most basic options that will lose alot of their meaning without the other questions But I'm still hoping something useful will come out of it.

So here goes

The answers to all six really depend on what lures are being thrown

Drag depends on hook size, usually only 1.5 to 2 kg. sometimes they engulf it, other times lip hooked lidhtly.you never know!

Are jewfish targeted in shallower water down south? Its not uncommon for me to chase then on 20plus metres in brisbane. Hence the heavier gear.. id hate to pull up a big jew from 20 metres in strong current on some of the gear you guys are describing.

Sydneys major estuary systems would the closest to the brisbane. Both in depths and current.
Im not aware of any dedicated jew guys fishing anything below 10lb if they are purely targeting jew in the major waterways. Chris cleaver did a talk last year saying he basically fished 10lb and up. Id say he is a pretty good benchmark for ability and technique.

The ultra light guys are probably fishing smaller water ways slash melbourne metro.

When i fished the brisbane/pin/seaway, i noticed line and leader were generally heavier. Basically because flow was much faster, Much heavier vibes were used more often and more large bycatch . Threadies in the brisbane, Kings and other pelagics in the seaway and similar at the pin.

Vic basically has no large bycatch to think of and Sydneys waters generally speaking only have the by catch like Kings in the warmer months.

First try for a Hawkesbury Jew the other week and landed an 84cm on a Samaki Thumper 70 in whitebait. No luck since then....I can see these are going to frustrate me! Caught on:

Daiwa Ballistic 2500
Dobyns Champion 6-12lb
Torah Jigging PE 18lb
FC Rock 10lb leader

Leader a bit light but ran the risk to get the bite....had no worries. A bit more of a 'lob' with a lure that size but does the trick

Rod: Daiwa gen black Beowulf 7-15kg, 50g cast weight, 6ft, fast taper (if you can't find one you can substitute with a piece of rebar)

Reel: 4000 Stradic Ci4 (3000 would do just fine though)

Braid: 30lb daiwa shinobi

Drag: screw the knob down until either your finger snaps or the thread strips

Leader: 30-60lb tortue mono
