When's a good time to hang up the fishing hat?

When it comes to fishing, everyone has something they view as a "good luck charm". For some it may be a specific lure, a rod, or maybe a certain brand of undies

On a trip to Thailand in 2007 , I purchased a hat, that I found to be extremely comfortable, and sat well. Especially whilst in the boat the hat had the ability to stick to ones head, even once I opened up the Horses

As I have a fondness for the hat, I look at it as a must have on when fishing, be it sunny, raining, day or night.

So as a matter of priority, when I decide to go fishing, the hat is one of the first things I reach for when organising the gear, for the next days fishing.

Given the hat has been put through its paces, it is looking a bit tired and weary.. The brim is just a shadow of its former self back in 2007, and she , like her owner is starting to show age..

I am reluctant to retire the old girl, but on the other note, she may need to be hung up before she totally breakdown..

Everyone has a good luck charm, when it comes to fishing... I would be interested in hearing what others have to "ensure" their day on the water remains prosperous?

I hadnt noticed that before - You've been wearing fish Kryptonite every time you fish since 2007 - you've got a screw loose - imagine how dangerous you would be without that splash of orange

Time for a new one orange man

I thought you were retiring from fishing lol. You make your own luck mate you don't need a hat to catch fish. I haven't found any good luck charms. I found having a Victorian on your boat to be very bad luck.... Even former Viccos that now live in Tassie aren't bad luck but a true Vicco seems to be bad to the Bream gods. Tested the theory with someone from Sydney and they don't have the same bad luck.....

Dunno if the Iced Coffees are good luck but I'd probably die with out them.... Simon likes to have a packet of snakes on the boat. You like your own "Bream Juice" to. People say Bananas are bad luck but I think they are only bad luck if you take them and don't eat them. At Ansons Day 1 I had a couple on board and ate them both. Day 2 I took them again but didn't eat them....hmmmm.

I have a lucky fishing hat too. It a maroon peaked billabong truckers cap. Its also looking a bit tattered and weather. Even if i don't wear the hat, it still sits under a hatch in the boat. Just gotta be on the boat i reckon, don't always have to be wearing it!!

Just on the bananas, my missus made a lunch pack for me and SCK when we fished the hoppies vic bream on day one. She added some bananas to the cooler bag and handed it over. We got our bag of 5 that day within the first 2 hours. When we stopped to eat we found the bananas lol.

Day 2, made sure no bananas were on the boat, and put 1 fish in the live well and got smoked by or dropped several good fish. Go figure!!!

The only reason that that hat has lasted so long and made it through so many trips is that it has more suncreen than the cancer council has in its storage.

I have witnessed this hat fall off and land on top of the water, then being so water transparent it parted the snowy river at Marlo as it fell to the bottom.

it certainly has brought you some luck Nicko.

You are probably right...It is has a UV rating of SPF 100 plus.. If i was ever taking in a water, and the bilge malfunctioned, it would be the first thing id turn to..

It has looked after me well... So well, in posting this post, i almost feel some betrayal to the hat

I would not hang up that hat until it simply can't be worn anymore mate.
