What reel are you running? Make sure the line roller is moving it may be jammed.

Sounds like its really twisted. You need to get out on a footy oval with a mate and walk most of it out then let it untwist for a tic. Wind it back on under a bit of tension so it doesn't cut into the line that is already on the spool.

Maybe your putting to much fireline on the spool?! how far to the lip is the line layed?

Also is the fireline brand new? if it is, it will take a session or two to wear it in.

Another problem could be your leader knot. How long are you making your leader?. If you make it to long so that the knot lays on the spool it can get caught with the main line and pull out loops causing tangles.

Hope that helps.

cheers, Nathan

This may be a long shot but have you been casting into the wind. Wind can cause all sorts of problems

A way to minimise problems with tangles is to pull out a short length of line under drag pressure after each cast and wind it back on through your fingers. Keep tension on the line until the weight of the lure takes over. Sounds like a pain in the arse and I only do it when casting into the wind but it does ensure even line lay on those first few turns off the handle

yeah thats it probly, winding firline on loose is a big no no, often if ppl snag up, snap the leader off then wind all 20 metres (or what ever) loosly onto the reel with out tension, rig up again go for a ripper of cast and all that line comes off in 1 big ball of line because it was loose on the spool, the exact same thing happend to me on the long weekend, cause i was being lazy, holding ur hand there can fix ur line problem.
ps after a session fishing say docklands, tie on a lil bomb sinker and throw it as far as u can, winding line back in under really tight tension, readdy for next session, and u know it an't gunna stuff up on ya hope this helps
