what rods do you prefer?
Hi guys since just starting out in the hb scene I have heard softer rods are better for hb but I am using a soft rod and stiff rod for them
I want to know what your preference is and why? Cheers

Yeah people tend to say that soft, or slow tapered rods are better for fishing hardbodies because you're less likely to pull hooks when fighting/hooking fish, but honestly I just prefer a crisp med-fast tapered rod for just about everything. I've dropped more fish on hards using a megabass saratoga, which has a very slow taper, than I have fishing cranks on my old 2-4kg pflueger supreme, which is a very fast tapered broom stick.

Based on your location, I assume you are primarily targeting bream on HB?
First of all, I have to say I am no bream fisherman despite the fact that I do target them occasionally during the cool dry season here in the NT. Therefore my suggestion might not be as valid as the ones given by the experience bream anglers on this forum. However, having said that, I do fish a varieties of styles - from the 6' UL spinning in the jungle creek to 10' H shorecasting from the breakwall. Needless to say, I have experimented with a lot of outfits. I have found myself accustom to rods with a regular to regular fast taper when it comes to medium and fast moving lure, be it a hard bodied sinking pencil or a soft plastic jerkbait. Generally speaking, rods with regular to regular fast taper tend to be more versatile (i.e. less technique and lure style specific). In essence, fishing rods' taper designs are to accommodate the fisherman's fishing style and enhance the lure performance. There is no use if you as the fisherman is not comfortable with the rod and its taper. That is why I suggest to start with a rod suitable for the lures you are going to use with a regular to regular fast taper (keep in mind different manufacturer have slightly different interpretations). Once and if, you have developed a specific style or grew fond of a particular type of lure, then maybe invest in a more technical specific rod to maximise the effectiveness. The bottom line is you have to feel comfortable with it. Last edited by The Doctor; 13-02-2014 at 06:47 AM. |

These days I prefer a rod with a faster taper. Especially since changing to fluorocarbon straight through. There's enough stretch in the line to stop those tiny trebles pulling out.

i prefer fast/ xfast rods for everything,I prefer having that contact with the lure and not having that sloppy feeling associated with many slow rods. Plus it also means I can use the rod for other applications without needing a new rod. I also rarely use HB's for bream, so you shouldn't listen to me haha

Dont fish for bream much, but when I do I prefer a 102 kg rod. with the bit of extra slop, I think it gives me a lot more casting distance with lighter lures.

There is often confusion with tapers and stiffness. A fast taper rod doesn't necessarily mean its stiff or crisp. Neither does a slow taper mean that is sloppy. You can get sloppy fast tapered rods likewise a crisp and even stiff slow taper rods. My preference for an allrounder and HB rod is a slow tapered not too stiff but very crisp one. And for Placcy and blades a slightly stiffer version of that.
For me its crispness that is the key.

For the record I find the Gen Black (stiffer) to be a great plastics rod and the Lox (softer) a great hardbody/surface rod.
