motor hours . how many is too many.

Just curious guys as to what people's thought on motor hours are. At what point to people say " thats too many hours ".

Im currently looking at a boat that has 180 hours , a few others have less hours , but this one is at the right price for me .

So how many hours can a motor have till you say thats too many

Hey,

Depends on service history and maintenance. My Merc 2 stroke just had it's 500 hour service and still gets along great.

Cheers,

180 is not a lot. Also take in to account the servicing of the motor, check weather the seller has service records that you can see, and how old is the motor? A 2009 model with 180 hours should be good but a 2000 model might be getting a bit old - for me anyway.

07 Opti with those hours should be a great motor and serve you well for years. Check the servicing, if the seller has records then grab it!

Its from the states . As far as im aware , there aren't any servicing differences between local mercury's and OS merc's ? Any one know ?

Meaning the parts are all the same ?

Parts will all be the same, just zero warranty obviously...

If the boat is anywhere near South Carolina, see if you can get Don Weed from http://www.europeanmarine.org/ to have a look at it. He's a gun Master mercury mechanic who helps out a ton of people on BBC.

RE: Hours, mine's clocked up 320 hours in 2.5 years - also a 200 Opti. Was leftover 2009 stock in a crate, first fired up in September 2010.

Couple of things to look for: FULL service history and what part of the country the boat is from.

If they live in an area with below zero temparatures, need to ensure they perform the winterizing procedures correctly (or better yet, a shop does it for them). Doesn't need to be done if the boat is from the Southern states.

A motor that's being used consistently is a lot better than one that sits around for months on end. I know guys (commercials) who are nudging 5 figure hour numbers on motors that see two speeds, nothing or wot without them skipping a beat. Old man's boat his selling had close to 550 hours and it is as good as day dot. It's all about how its maintained and not the amount of hours
