Which motor for proline 370

Hi everyone,

Im just looking into getting a new motor for my stacer proline 370,
and wondering what the thoughts were for best makes.
Im keen for an e-tec 25 but unsure if it would be too heavy at around 70kg.
My other choice was a yammie 25N which is about 20kg lighter and are a whole lot cheaper as well, any thoughts or input into this would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I had a tohatsu 25 on a 3.85 explorer, went well and did the job. Had it modified down the track to push out 30hp. Went for years and years with no drama's, and cost next to nothing brand new!

I have a merc 25hp on my 385 and am also looking at gettin it blown out to 30hp, did it make much of a difference forster? did you need to reprop? and did you get much more top end speed?

cheers

Hey Dan,

Mate it made heaps of difference! I had problems with 2 big blokes, livewell and all the gear and getting it to pop out of the hole, somedays it just wouldnt get on the plane at all.

My old marine mechanic put it down to the weight that it was trying to push out, but my current mechanic explained that the tohatsu motor at the time came out with the wrong prop size and the dealer's were meant to change them over at time of sale.

To cut a long story short, I had 2 options a) re-prop or b) gain another 5HP and see if the solved the problem. B) was a lot cheaper and improved it out of sight without having to stuff around with props.

It punched myself out of the hole quickly and effortlessly, had a much better top end speed (no gps) and with a full load onboard, still punched out of the hole 100% and top end speed was still OK.

I'd definatly go with the extra 5hp first and see how that goes.

I think that the extra weight of the motor does make a bit of a difference as the boats are fairly light to start with so the actual weight percentage is higher. I think the benefit of the extra power would almost be absorbed by the additional weight (compared 2 stroke or 2 etec / 4 stroke). We're the benefit is if you can get 30hp out of a 25hp as they are generally the same weight for some models.

sounds great nath let us know how you go!

Forster, yeah mine has no probs gettin out the hole atm and top speed isnt to bad so my prop must be ok, just chasing a bit more punch and some more top end! its relatively cheap anyway so might aswell!

So i put the boat in yesterday afternoon....

Everything was going great, till i went the accelerate out of the boat ramp,
and experienced very bad cavitation, immediately realised that ive put a short shaft motor on a long shaft transom.
Il never trust anything i read on the net again till i check it my self lol (most websites that contained specs for my particular boat model specified S/S)
All i had to do was measure the transom myself in the first place.
Anyway i went to the dealer and the sales guy wasnt there but a couple other guys said i have a good chance at getting it exchanged so fingers crossed anyway, i find out tomorrow.

Live and learn haha,
Cheers Nath

Yeah still cant believe i made this mistake, but anyway.
Because the dealer doesn't stock the motor they sold me, nor do they sell many, they couldnt take it back.
So i am now paying to get the transom cut down to fit it and gettin a bit of reinforcement to the transom to take the 25hp, as it is going to fly with it on haha. This works out to be virtually no more expensive than selling the s/s and buying another long shaft anyway. I have also noticed that stacer also build my boat model as a short shaft transom anyway so what im doin now is in a sense making it better than it was before with the reinforcement.
Just a little upset at all the fishing time ive lost from it.

you may get better stability(maybe) with the motor being lower, only downfall is its less of a leaning post when doing your buisness out the back
