Kalbarri goodness
I spent the weekend up in kalbarri with a mate of mine. To say that we are novices in saltwater is an understatement.
My mates dad has just gotten into fishing and likes to do things in a big way so he bought a 25 foot fibreglass centre console with a 300hp Suzuki on it. It is a gem of a motor and gem of a boat. It is said to do 63 knots. We managed 40 knots in conditions that you wouldn't want to go any faster. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it would do 60 knots either. We spent Friday afternoon scouting and learning the ropes. The second and last day was a lot better. We headed north 20km and found some good grounds. We anchored on some bait and over a few holes in about 30m of water. After 15 minutes we pulled a pink snapper to 52cm. I decided it was calm enough to float a mulie down with no weight on it and soon after I was on to something that went deep and wide. A short time later I was noticing my backing even though my reel was locked up tight and I had my thumb on the spool. That's what u get when u bring a knife to a gun fight(abu 6500 c3 with 120y od 14lb line!!!). I lost what ever it was and retied. A short while later I was on again but this fish went for the horizon. Same procedure only this time he broke off before I could see backing. The reel has been sitting In he shed for a few years and I suspect the drag was dry dusty and sticky because line wasn't coming off smoothly. We caught a few small bronze whalers(which were in plague proportions) and then I put the silly gear away and pulled up anchor. It was nice to have put some bend in my new rod though. We spent the rest of the day trawling and chasing birds. We got on to quite a few tuna. We managed to get onto a Spanish mackeral from he edge of a bait ball. I was using a stella 8000 with some heavy line. I wasn't used to the power of it and when I got the fish to the edge of the boat it was too fresh ang I managed to pull the hooks with he tight drag I was fishing. From then on the rest of the fish fell to saltiga 6500s on smith rods. The next exciting thing to happen was a hookup in a school of tuna. We slowed the boat for me to wind he fish in only for the other two rods to take off. The dillema was that there were three rods and only two people on he boat. We both pumped as hard as we could so we could get to the third rod. One of the lines was going crazy and we suspect that a spaniard was the culprit. We will never know because we managed to snap off those last two. We did manage to get a tuna into the boat. The final climax of the day was a hell of a lot of fun. One of the lines managed to pick up some weed and wasn't swimming properly. Instead of winding it in I ripped it through he water aggressively to tear the weed off. Just as the last bit of weed came off he line went crazy and a fish took a run of around 100m. The weed on must have stirred he surface enough to attract a spannish mackeral. I played it soft and had it in he boat 5min later. It went about 1.3m and 15kg all in all it was a great albeit short trip and can't wait to do it again. I will post up he few pics that i have when I get off my iPhone and onto a pc. |
