The Legislative Council's, Public Administration Committee is currently holding an inquiry into recreational/public access to the drinking water storage and catchment areas.
If you fish, camp or bushwalk these areas you have just less than a fortnight to make a written submission to the committee, closes 13 November '09. This may well be our last chance to have a say about recreational fishing activities in the SW sweetwater zones and especially as this Govt seems to be a little more sympathetic to public opinion in this regard, (ie re-opening Logue Brook Dam). You can bet your last hard-body that the Water Authority will be pushing hard to close off all access, so have your say. This committee is looking for public views in particular. The link below is to to all parliamentary inquiries, follow the link on this page to: Recreation Activities within Public Drinking Water Source Areas. http://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/web/...es+-+Inquiries The report is due to Parliament by July next year.

Media Statement
Legislative
Council MEDIA RELEASE ___________________________________________ 30 September 2009 Inquiry into Recreation Activities within Public Drinking Water Source Areas The Legislative Council Standing Committee on Public Administration has commenced an inquiry into a range of issues relating to the conflict that exists between drinking water sources, or catchments and their use for recreational purposes. In Western Australia there is a requirement where if a water catchment area is to be used for residential drinking purposes, no recreational activity can occur on that body of water. Alternatively, if a catchment or body of water is used for recreational purposes, it cannot be used for residential drinking use. As a result, the Committee will focus its inquiry on: 1. the social, economic and environmental values and costs of recreation access, where possible, to Perth hills and south west drinking water catchments, including the costs and benefits to public health, water quality, recreation, Indigenous culture and management options; 2. state, interstate and international legislation, policy and practice for recreation within public drinking water source areas, including information relating to population health benefits and impacts; 3. the range of community views on the value of water and recreation in public drinking water source areas; 4. the costs and benefits of alternative water quality management strategies and treatment for water catchments containing recreation; 5. possible recreation sites or opportunities available outside the Perth hills and south west drinking water catchments. The Committee is calling for written submissions from interested persons and is particularly interested in the views of the general public. Submissions should be received no later than 13 November 2009. It is important that any request for the Committee to prohibit publication of all or part of a submission, or the identity of the person making it, be attached to the submission when it is lodged. Written information about the form and content of submissions can be obtained from the Committee Office or viewed on Parliament’s website at: www.parliament.wa.gov.au The Committee is to report to the Legislative Council by 1 July 2010. Ends. For more information, contact: Hannah Gough - hgough@parliament.wa.gov.au Phone: (08) 9222 7379

Thanks Mark
Guys please don't sit back on this get a submission in - there is a golden opportunity to open up other waters for fishing - maybe even other species. The more submissions the better - if you need to know more get in touch with WATFFA (WA Trout and Freshwater Fishing Association) or watch the Recfishwest website for a copy of their submission. We need access as the other states have e.g Q'ld Barra to Bass trail. Get on it!!

First Salvo or is that BUMP?
Recfishwest
Media Release Swimming in crap – Water Corporation says raw sewerage in Swan River not priority. Recfishwest today expressed its disgust that the water ‘Dialogue’ demonstrated that the water managers believe that they are above the law. Chief Executive Officer of the Water Corporation, Sue Murphy, said that reducing sewerage spills in the Swan River was not a priority. Ms Murphy wanted all water supply dams to remain locked up, as pristine water was demanded by their engineers. But it was okay for the people of Perth to be regularly exposed to raw sewerage because it was less than 1% of nutrients. In response to a direct question on the release of poor quality water from Wellington Dam, Director General of the Department of Water, Kim Taylor said that the irrigators wouldn’t like it so it wouldn’t be considered. The Executive Director of Recfishwest was aghast at the ongoing hypocrisy of government instrumentalities. “As long as the Water Corporation can lock up its own water supplies, it doesn’t seem to matter how much crap escapes into the Swan River. If an ordinary citizen dumped tonnes of raw sewerage into the Swan River they would expect action to be taken, but when it is the Water Corporation, hiding behind irrelevant statistics, no action is taken at all!” Mr Prokop proclaimed. “The Department of Water has yet again demonstrated that they are incapable of fairly managing the water resources of this state.” “They continue to ignore the release of raw sewerage into the Swan River yet insist that a fly fisherman fishing in Samson Dam next to Alcoa’s mining operations would destroy life as we know it.” “As long as the irrigators are happy about the Collie River being used as a drain, with its subsequent impact on the people of Bunbury, it is acceptable to the Department of Water.” “There is still a lack of understanding that water is a common property resource and that the community wants to help with fair and objective management.” Mr Prokop commended the Minister for his objective review of recreation in water supply dams. However it is clear that the water managers still have a very long way to go to recognise wider community interests. ENDS More food for thought fellow anglers, you may never have another opportunity to have your views on recreational access to OUR water catchment resources so carefully scrutinised by a parliamentary inquiry. Make a submission, you have a week left.
