Hi Ralph,
I have that rod in GLX, although it's crisper than the IMX, it's not dissimilar (calling CHUNQX, he has personal comparison experience!).
It throws light hards really good distances as it loads lower and easier than the dropshot style actions. Even though it has a more moderate taper than a rod designed for heavier work, I find if you load it up quick enough you can pull solid fish from nasty places too.
Cheers, Craig.

Hi Ralph. I've got the SR842 in both IMX and GLX, and they're my 'go-to' rods for fishing straight-through fluoro in 3 and 4lb - mostly for hardbody fishing on the flats.

The 7 foot length gives you plenty of distance when you're casting, while the tip is definitely soft enough to protect light leaders and line in the fight, and also has the cushioning effect you're looking for to stop hooks from pulling. The 6kg+ bag I got in the Derwent earlier this year was caught on my two SR842s.

I'm not associated with Loomis in any way, but I would certainly wholeheartedly recommend the SR842 as a flats and hardbody rod. I'll have mine at Albany - you're very welcome to have a flick with them if you're there too.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Hi Ralph,

Put it this way, it definitely wouldn't be my first choice for reefing fish out of gnarly structure like racks, etc. But this fella came from a rocky shoreline and caused no problems.

Of course, a lot depends on drag settings and leader strength. But I haven't lost many fish on these rods (the only notable exceptions were a couple of 'unstoppables' in Tassie on 3lb line!)

If you'd like a bit more detail, feel free to drop me a PM and I can always give you a call.

Mike

The SR842-2 is by far the best bream rod I've used. Its crisp, its sensitive, its light, its 2 piece for easy packing away, I use it for HBs and SPs. When I first got it, I used it exclusively for SPs only thinking they might be too soft for HBs. One day I decided to just try them for HBs and realised how wrong I was in my initial assessment and now I use this everytime I use HBs.
The one thing I would say is its "weakness" (but not really that weak at it either) is the stopping power. If I knew I was going to need stopping power on something like a 2kg trevally amongst pylons, I'd use the DSR820S GLX instead. I haven't fished oyster racks for bream but when I fish for bream in every other place, its the SR842-2 IMX everytime.
