I thought I would just have a check of the bearings on the trailer before the hike down to the Pole today and I though one was a bit noisy. So I pulled off the durahub and discovered the hub full of metal fillings and the inside bearing had broken right through. I have never seen a bearing split right through like this but I'm glad I checked it. This would have failed at some point during the next 1000 odd km's. I may well make it without a drama now. So take the time and have a quick check people. It may save a bit of time on the side of the road

You can see that they have been very hot. Any distances like that would have failed in no time. Lucky you checked it. Would hate to be trying to do it at 8pm on a friday afternoon on the way to walpol after work. Add to the fact that you would have to let it coold down before you could even go there.

Truth be know I have a spare hub on the spare wheel with packed bearings just in case, so only a 5 minute change over if the worst happens

Nice piciture Stu, looks like them rollers got mighty hot at sometime, elsen somebody done forgot to back off that thar spline nut a 1/8th turn. Been wonderun' iffin he be Smokey or Jeb???

They done some big miles but IMHO it is a simple failure of the bearing. It does happen

And JFYI the nut was backed off and the hub was always full of oil as it was until I pulled it off today. And no it hasn't got hot guys that's the trick photo I took tonight

Yeah I've seen that before. Thats where you put a filter over your flash to make the pretty blue sheen over the surface of that roller.

make sure you check them again after you have done about 20 klm mate they could be a bit loose or tight after a bit of a run

Doesn't look like they've been too hot, yes the blue tinge on the rollers is an indication of being hot but all bearings after some time will look like this.

The pitting on the inner race of the bearing shows a better indication of the poor state of the bearing and I'm guessing the outer race looked similar.

One possible cause for the cage to break like that is the bearing pre-load may have been too loose allowing the wheel to rattle around and put stress on the cage.
