Flatty Rod.

It isnt definate but i am considering getting a rod for the good old dusky. Problem is which one?? Any advice would be great. I have a good bream rod that has no problem with desent sized flathead only it makes them hard to target specificly cause i cant use a bigger jig head/soft plastic combination due to weight. I just want to be able to 'whip' with out the rod bending too much. looking for a spin rod.

THANKs.

a nice cheap rod that i have is the berkley dropshot 2-4kg rod that i use for my flathead fishing it is very strong in the tip and but and handles a flatty with ease, also if i am fishing very very tight structure i will use this due to the strong tip.

regards,
keechie

Yer,
Thanks keechie, I thought about that But i think i want something a bit heavier dont know about where you live but here on the gold coast it isnt unusual hooking 1m lizards. you could say they are gold coast barra. lol. But it isnt that. you could fight them with bream gear also. but its the weight of the lure i need for the depth of water. in some instences (high tide at the spit) ill use it im 15m +
thanks

yeah i know i have been there and seen a guy catch an 80cm flatty and he said it would usually be bigger i live in brisbane where it is often in the right places to get an 80cm flatty but the lure weight is 3-12g but i expect it can cast up to 15 by the way it feels, whats you price range?

regards,
keechie

I dont live over east, so I dont know what sort of tackle you would use for fishing for duskies but i've got a shimano starlo-stix 2-5 kilo rod that would fit those sort of specs on a rod you were looking for. The casting weight is 4-15 gs and its 7 foot. not to expensive either.

i tend to lean on the 6-8lb side of things...7' x fast taper, this allows a bit of pulling power not as much for fighting the fish BUT to set the hooks on the larger jig heads...its alright to use bream gear (which i do sometimes) BUT when upsizeing to say 1/2 oz heads holding heavier forged hooks, the extra grunt in the blank alows you to really strike @ the fish and stick that big ol hook in that bucket mouth...
ive had countless numbers of decent fish fight all the way to the boat (15-25' of water mainly) and open their mouth boatside and let go of the Sp' as with my 6'10 bream stick im unable to get enough power to really set the hook...

just my 2 cents.

yeh,
hotrod happens here too dont feel alone!!!
but it isnt just setting the hooks. its the whole weight issue, i was watching a segment in Fishing dvd 10 on flathead in hervey bay??? i think . but it was with starling and they were pulling in 75cm to 80 something fish. but it wasnt that it was that they were casting heavy weights with those rods with near no bend. Doe anyone know what rods they were or rods like this??

Have you thought about looking at a baitcaster set up. There are plenty of Barra series rods from most manufacturers that I reckon should suit what you are looking at. I was looking at a $49 shimano graphite bait cast up to 8kg I think. I know it is cheap and obviously not as good as the more expensive ones but when ur fishing for flatties i'm sure you probably don't need the finesse that the more expensive ones provide. Lets face it they aren't a very fussy fish. One of my mates has a daiwa rod that he uses bream fishing. He has a twinpower 2500 on it with about 10lb. This rod is rated to 10kg yet he can still cast sx48's a mile. He tends to fish on the heavy side of things but gets away with it anyway. The rod was about $250 I think. I can assure you that that rod has plenty of power so you should be able to bed those hooks nice and good.

I remember either reading or seeing that those guys prefer using a snapper spin kind of rod for targeting hefty flatties. You wouldn't need to go with an 8 kg rod, IMHO that's a little overkill. Something 3-5 kg and fast or xfast actioned would work well. Plenty tip power to cast heavier jigs and set bigger hooks.

Yeh,
i have a bait caster and i know the Barra rods for $50 you were talking about. They are Shimano sonic pros. I would use my 'bass' bait casting tackle easily BUT... We have a 22ft Carribean reef runner WITH a hardtop. making bait casting Very tuff cause you ONLY have enough space for underarm throws. I do however use the bait caster in the tinnie. this is the dilemma, If i get a spin rod i can 'lob' my lures further and closer to the water. Something slightly lighter snapper could be ok.
