Stinger Hooks
Hope this comes out OK. I haven't got any plastics rigged to show yet, but will next trip out. Remember to imbed the stinger hook in the plastic otherwise it's a jag hook which is illegal.

thanks bear
one more question does the stinger hook get threaded through the whole plastic or does the line stay on thh outside and only the point of the hook is hidden? |

I usually just put the hook once through the plastic. It has to sit in the plastic, otherwise it's still a jag hook. I'll take some more pics next time out.

Maximum chance!
It's a good technique to use during comps that's for sure. I used stingers in the Augusta Final last year (and found the same, that the fish caught were all on the stingers), and pretty much always use them when using bass minnows etc..or when the fish are being finicky. I know Ev rigs every minnow he has with a sting..not that he catches many fish anyway hahaha. Zac, easy way I find is just to tie the line to the hook bend once it's through the plastic, and then thread the hook into the tail of the lure, with the line dangling around the outside..never seems to be an issue.

i'd like to see it rigged up with a soft plastic.
Is it commonly used and if so are there any particular fishing situations to fish using it?

I made the mistake with this method and rigged the hook up the plastic a bit and when the fish short took it i ripped the plastic from its mouth every time... Make sure you rig it down the plastic!

Zebbo,
This rig could be used at any time, that's the beauty of it. I usually try and have it sit no more than 25mm from the end of the plastic. For 3" plastics that would decrease to about 5mm. I'll get some pics at the ssns on the weekend and for anyone who wants to see, I'll show how to set them up there. Thanks,

Stinger hooks are widely used for both lures and natural baits.
With regard to long lures like the sandworm, and in fact all stinger assemblies, the leader to the stinger must be loose when the stinger is inserted, in order to allow the lure/bait to lay and swim straight. Use the lightest stinger leader you can get away with, for maximum stealth and flexibility. |

Stingers
Don't want to be a spoil sport but stingers are not for C&R fishing.
I use this rigging method myself on sandworms for King George Whiting (thanks Troy) and often the fish will inhale the worm right down, causing damage to gills and guts. very hard to remove the hook...plus I don’t like cutting lines and leaving hooks in released fish. Maybe Bream hit rubbers different to KGs but I know if the fish has swallowed the stinger it’s into the ice box. I can’t see WABT or ABT condoning the use of stingers....its the same a bill wrapping marlin......very frowned upon Sorry just my two bobs worth

To a certain extent I would have thought them better Andrew. I've seen big bream inhale a HB and plastic to the point where it does more damage than good to get them out. I've only had one stinger taken down deep and it was an easy process to snip back to the hook so that there was little to no obstruction. It would rust away fairly quickly and be out of the way for the fish.

Yep agree Bear.....trebles can cause a heap of damage...
the stingers we used years ago were normally trebles...which did all sorts of external as well as internal damage.... Not begrudging anyone using this method...I spose I was just concerned about gutsy blue nosers scoffing down long rubbers and getting deeply hooked..... Crush the barb on the stinger would help its removal as well. Jeeze I'm starting to sound like Wally
