I wasn't knocking the asking of a question, more simply pointing out that whatever info he gets seems to have no context. Presumably the article is intended to be informative and I was wondering how you could generate an informative article from asking 200 random people for a list of 10 lures without knowing:

1. where they fish (ie which state)
2. What sort of lures they've actually used.
3. Whether they are good or indifferent at fishing for bream (ie pros, good amateurs, or once a year)
4. what sort of bream they are targeting.
5. Whether they fish from a boat or are shore-based.
6. Whether they fish rivers, ocean, around piers, structures or flats.
7. Whether they are fishing deep or shallow.

With some of that background to a person's list, an overall top 10 list could be super-informative and make for an interesting article, but without any of it, it just seems pretty lazy journalism to ask "What's your favorite lure?" of 200 random people without finding out anything more. I'd hope most fishing mags go to a little more trouble than this when writing articles about favorite lures for particular species. Just my opinion is all. Admittedly, I'm still flicking through the lists and getting ideas from people who i know fish near me, but this 'journo' won't even have that info. That;'s all i was asking of him - how is this going to become an article in a magazine people will be paying for and expecting the journos to have some expertise in the area they are writing about. Perhaps there is something he's getting here that will be informative- I was simply asking how this sort of vox pop 'survey' will become an article worth buying?.
The statastical tests involved in working out those variables and putting it into context would be huge, and probaly impossible!
I think thats the idea of the Question - to rank the lures from 1-10 so not sure whats the point of naming 5 lures; or not ranking them?

I'd hope most fishing mags go to a little more trouble than this when writing articles about favorite lures for particular species. Just my opinion is all. Admittedly, I'm flicking through the lists and getting ideas from people who i know fish near me or in water's like where I fish, but this 'journo' won't have that info. That's all i was asking of him - how is this going to become an article in a magazine that people will be paying for when people (me anyway) expect the journos to have some expertise in the area they are writing about so that I can learn something. Perhaps there is something he's getting here that will be informative- I was simply asking how this sort of vox pop 'survey' will become an article worth buying?

my top 10:
1. sx40
2. squidgy wriggler
3. Strike pro micro vibe
4. Squidgy critter.
5. Khamsin chubby sinking
6. Gulp 6" sandworm cut back to 4"
7. plastic grubs and worms (various sorts and colours)

That's about all of my regulars that I'd regard as reliable bream catchers!
Lazy journalism would be for me to name my top 10 lures and write an article based on only my feedback. If you had of read one of my earlier posts, this is NOT going to be a standard top 10 countdown but more an analysis on fads and social conditioning. Therefore, i couldn't really be stuffed drilling right down to the colour of your undies to try and decipher what lures are better for yellowfin or black bream in various states and at different times of day. While you have pointed out some good test questions, fact is I couldn't give a stuff about that for this particular piece.

To say the info i am getting will have no context is on the presumption you know what it is i am trying to uncover and because you cannot see my angle here you are skeptical. This makes you sound a bit naive.

The question is a simple one, with a simple outcome for me. What lures do you like to tie on for bream. From there i will analyse the results based on the info i am trying to extract, which i will not be highlighting here. Fork out your cash to find out.

I will also say this. I have an idea for something here that i am running with, my editor will have final say on what gets published as it may ruffle a few feathers.

Thank you for everyone who has participated here. I hope I might get a few more responses. currently I'm over 120 fishos polled in 5 days. Who knows how far this will go, 200 might have been a little understated!

Thanks fellas. I appreciate everyones feedback. I think this was a very good representation of VIC bream anglers. I am pushing this in all states to get a balanced review.

Happy bream fishing. For those interested, the Hawkedsbury River is firing at the moment on HUGE breamskis and jew. I bagged a 1.6kg bream on a Squidies Pro Fish 65mm and a 6kg jew on the same placcy

how do you get that this is a good representation of VIC bream anglers?

out of the people who participated in this forum and have their location attached to their post, only just over 40% of the people polled are from vic.
