Good thread guys, I think this encourages alot of people to actually pull their reels apart and have a play. As has been said, some information can be dangerous, but doing nothing is also dangerous at times!

What do you use to clean the old lubricant from gears and bearings to put new lubricant on?

I found a good degreaser in woolworths of all places
Costs like three bucks and comes in a big can
Great stuff, I've gone through heaps

With bearings would you fully submerge them in degreaser or carb cleaner to get all the oil and grease out then leave them to dry?

I think you have heaps of people inspired with this thread mate! I pulled apart my zillion type r last weekend for a full clean out and re-lube, didnt expect any difference as its in pretty good nick, but came out better than I remember it to have been when it was new.

Now I have another issue with a brand new steez 2508 (old model though), has a mad clunk when under load. Seems to be when the spool is fully retracted it binds a little while winding, any ideas what it could be? Had to happen in the thick of jack season aswell, dont know weather to have it sent to daiwa or have a look see myself....

I fully submerge my bearings. Let them sit for a while then stir them around to ensure the old stuff comes off. Then I take em out, blow air though em and leave them to dry for a while before lubricating. I found out recently that you should never store your small bearings without lube. I keep mine in clean zip locked bags if they aren't going into a real.

Something else I'm looking into is getting an ultrasonic cleaner for my bearings and other bits and pieces

The best way to clean bearings is to pull the shields off and hit them with carburettor cleaner and compressed air. Then re-lubricate.

Getting the shields off tiny bearings is hard but it can be done, rubber shielded bearings are a pain because it is tricky to get the shields off without damaging them.

Jewellers flat tip screw driver is the way to go
I can open the smallest of metal sealed and plastic sealed bearings. Just make sure you use a strong screwdriver so it doesn't snap

I've been using a jewellers screwdriver that I ground to a fine point for years, an illuminated magnifying glass and a small vice make it much easier as well.

This is getting serious now
Does anyone in the biz use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean bearings and other bits and pieces?
I've been looking at some but just wanted to get a grip on the ins and outs
