Shimano stradic Ci4 - why 2500 instead of 1000?

As much as I love my daiwas in the mid to mid-high range, I have to admit Shimanos are stirring up a bit of curiousity given the lower end ones that I have seem to last longer in harsher conditions than my more expensive daiwa reels. Also the new Stradics ci4 seem to be really light; the 1000 size is 165g. I see alot of people on here preferring the 2500 size over the 1000 size? I would have thought the 1000 was more than sufficient for bream. Is it because the 2500 size are used for chasing bigger fish or the bigger spool copes better with line twists?

I think it has to do with the weight-as well as the capacity/drag.

The Ci4 is already VERY light, as 198g (2500) would be just as light or lighter then most 1000 size anyway.

The way I see it, for it being so light you might aswell get a 2500 for the better drag and capacity plus you have a larger variety for different species.

Bigger spool depth, more line.
Bigger spool diam, line comes off spool easier, more distance
Increased drag,....
Bigger gears, longer life
Bigger size, less weight, better balance for rods

well said guys.

The 1000 would be perfect for those Uber light rods that you cant seem to balance correctly.. apart from that I'd always go the 2500.

and the overall size of the 2500 cl4 compares with a 2000 Daiwa as well.
cheers nereus

I'm running a 1000 Ci4 and love it. I love using a smaller and more compact reel, it's just more comfortable (for me).

I used to get lots of line problems but switched to Power Pro and now they've stopped - so I think it's the line that's the blame most of the time, not the reel.

P.S. And yes, Shimano is all over Daiwa when it comes to durability.

I loved my ci4 1000 and miss it terribly. I just didn't have a rod that it really suited.

many people use the 2500 just incase a big trev or something comes along and runs a long distance wit a 1000 it would probably spool you but im thinkn of getting a 1000 for my next reel tareting bream specificly with it it shouldnt be to bad unless you get something HUGE on it that likes to run long distances but yuo cant get every fish in you'v got to lose a few

In regards to trevs on the 1000 size... Using 5lb main and a 6lb fluro leader I landed this on my 1000 -

The leader was my only concern during the fight. The main line, rod and especially the reel were never going to be a liability against such a fish. I am not certain as to how much line I had on the reel, but I would estimate at anything between 150 and 200m.

No no, I think you are right. I also think that is why people by them... Well, one of the reasons anyway.

My point is that the 1000's are far more capable than most would think.

Matt.

A 1000 reel is quite capable of catching larger fish such as big trevally. I remember when I was still relatively new to fishing, I had a shimano slade 1000, loaded up with some quality 6lb braid. Took down big tailor and salmon regularly throwing small metals, such good fun on a light rod with a 1000 reel.

Personally, I don't like the turning circle of a 1000 reel. I'm only 20 and get quite sore wrists from using hardbodies on them tiny reels.
The only practical advantage of a 1k, from my perspective, is it's a lot easier to work smaaaall topwaters. With a 2500 it's easy to overshoot your retrieve and stuff up the action on surface walkers (for me)
