A good start would be the 17-85mm, definitely a better option than the twin lens kit

Usually comes in the "enthusiast kit" or you can get it separately.

If you are not going to get L glass then I would go the Tamron Aspherical XR Di 28-75mm Lens. I used to use this a bit on a 350D and it was a nice piece of kit. Inexpensive and you can probably get in E-bay as they were very common when I was looking for one.......I got mine in one of the small shops in Melbourne about 5 doors up from Michaels....it did the job well and at that price if it goes in the drink it's not the end of the world (as opposed to Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM)

Terrence Cutler: There's something you need to know, Kenny. You're not the only athlete here at Jeff Davis. I happen to be training for a Triathlon right now. Doin' a lot of running, and cycling, swimming. Well you know all about that. Kenny Powers: No actually I don't. I do SPORTS. Not try to be the best at exercising. |

What Trout Bum said Nev, the Tamron is a great piece to start out with, very fast, but you might find the 28 a bit long for tight family shots at the party.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tamron-28-75m...item3a5ec11d24 For a bit more lolly the Canon efs 17-55 is an excellent piece of glass but won't give you as much tele to pull long shots in close, but sharp as. I bought a good second hand 24-105L for my 450D and it rarely comes off now. 24 is still a bit long, but I am over family groups shots now I paid under grand for a lens still under warranty, bit heavy though. The quality is worth it.

thanks for the info mate, will look into it, the weight is a major problem for me,as i have muscular dystrophy & struggle with the slightest weight some days which might even rule out a dslr all together ,i will have to get the shops to suss some out in person.

If you want a real all round lens then Tamron do an 18-270 that I got a few months ago and am pretty happy with to cover most situations for my 400D. I know its not one for the purist though but if you want one lens to cover landscapes and want a big zoom and do some macro work then it may be worth looking at.
Saved hundreds by buying online from Hong Kong compared to local prices - will try and dig out the supplier if you want - they were pretty reliable and quick in delivery. Cheers Darren But - might be a bit heacy given your last post which I didnt see. I also have a Sony DX5 compact which I reckon is awesome and does great panoramas and HD video Last edited by DJC2; 22-09-2010 at 07:05 AM. Reason: Update |

1.6 Crop Sensor
Evilnev, the 550D has a 1.6 crop sensor so for example a 100 mm lens is actually a 160mm. So be careful what you buy.
There is a ton of glass for Canon, check second hand lens at camera electronic, you can save heaps. Regards Nick |
