Personally, I'm much more accurate with a 7ft rod than a 6'6" one, much easier to move the lure sideways while in flight.

If you fish out of a boat alot, practise in the back yard standing on a stool or chair, makes backhand and forehand casts more realistic.

I use casting plugs, but I cut them back to weigh less.

As for a target, a tennis ball works well. A smaller target creates a tighter focus point. Once you can hit it out in the open try putting it under a table to work on the forehand/backhand stuff.

I'm an old school 'hold the line with my finger' guy, no matter what I try I can't cast with my finger on the spool. Some of the best casters I have ever seen cast either way, it's more about consistency.

More important is the ability to slow/stop the line with your casting finger 'feathering the line'.

Good luck with it!

Dave

When it comes to accuracy and you're not cutting the mustard - try "Hitting the HP".

For just 2 easy payments of $29.95 "Uncle Larry's Cast-tastic" can be shipped to your door within 3 business days.

For pinpoint accuracy you hit the bottle and the low trajectory casts go under the seat and between the legs.

If you buy 2 - you also get the bonus DVD

It includes many riveting segments such as;

"Local Park - A practice casters Nirvana"
"Cabungee Madness - learning to flick cast up stream from between 2 bushes"
"The 'around the corner' cast"
and
"Hitting the bottle - one mans struggle to stay on target"

Extra features also include "3 hours of unedited footage" of me practice casting in the front yard.

Fishing World Magazine described it as a "5 hour Thrill-ride of audio-visual excellence" - but they've always been harsh critics of my work

On a slightly more serious note -

Before I completely mastered casting and started releasing my own DVD's I used to practice.

While fishing - If I was confronted with a scenario I was too scared to cast from - or too. I would make a mental note of what was obstructing me.

Then I'd go down to the park and recreate that scenario and work out a way to get my lure, where I wanted it to go.

If something is restricting your back cast - its no use practicing in the middle of the oval with no obstructions. Get in amoungst the bushes and recreate the scenarios that caused you problems.

Play-ground equipment is also very good for recreating man made structure. Just tell the kids to cover their eyes when you cast

If you dont mind losing lures and constantly retieing leaders you can practice on the water - but I prefer the local park

Cool i dissagree

i think you should start casting on cleared ares and cast short distances as a beginner until you get confident in casting and more accurate then you can avance to more difficult areas of casting .

theres no point placing a learner driver in a fomular one racing championships
you need to learn .before you can walk you need to learn how to crawl .
