Help required in decision on movie / video camera

I've been contemplating purchasing a movie / video camera such as a GoPro but its purely an experimental move so am reluctant to spend the necessary amount on one initially. I have seen a number of cheaper copies from the likes of audiosonic & similar and wonder if anyone can comment on the suitability of these units for taking suitable video for editing & later uploading?

The plan is to mount one on the head at present and perhaps boat mount.
I'm not to concerned by longevity at this point, as if I can see some value to the whole process I will likely upgrade. More interested in suitability & compatibility.

Further, what does one look for in this regard?
