600D or EOS-M camera?

Hi All,

Just after some opinions on 2 options of canon cameras I'm looking at but can't decide. Question for the camera buffs- Deciding between the canon 600D DSLR or the canon EOS-M compact system camera? Will be using it for fishing photos the same as magazines so fairly close up shots, and also landscape shots.

People's expierences and/or opinions would be awesome!

Cheers Sam.

It's less about the camera and more about the lenses that you stick on it. I have the 600D and use it for all my fishing pics. Maybe the M could be better if you want light weight and flexible. You can get an adapter to use all the SLR lenses on the M body.

That was going to be my next question haha, what glass should I put on the front of it. Was thinking maybe the 50mm f1.4?

What lense are using if you don't mind me asking?

I have a few that I use. I have a 50mm f1.8, an 18-270mm, a 100mm macro and an 8mm fisheye.

If you want something that does all of that then you are going to be buying a few bits of glass. Most of the time though I am using the 18-270 for the versatility. It's not as sharp as the other lenses but makes up for it in the speed in which I can frame a shot and bang off a pic.

The 50mm if quite versatile and you would probably like and get a lot of use out of the f1.4 some great shots can come at
Macro is more for set up shots and less for field work. \

The fish eye is just for fancy pants stuff. If you give me a sec I will put up some examples.

Thanks a lot for the help, very informative and exactly the info I was after! The photos are perfect to gauge the results as well.

Definitely going to get the 50mm but not sure now wether to go the f1.4 or f1.8 after seeing your photos. Would love a fisheye but way out of the ball park price wise, especially starting out.

You'd probably be surprised with the cost of the fish eye. I got mine sub $300. If you wanted you could grab the 50mm f1.8 and the fish eye for only $100 more than the f1.4

there are so many lenses that you could go mad looking and deciding.

I'd go with the 600D, it's a bit more versatile and you will be able to do more with it. The only down side is lunking around a bag of camera gear when you go fishing...

50mm 1.8 is probably the best budget lens money can buy, if you shop around online you can pick one up for under $100. Also the 18-55mm stock lens goes pretty well for what it is!

Think the 600D is the go then! And the fish eye lens is very tempting at that price too! Just gotta decide now wether I just get the f1.4 or go a little cheaper lens and get the f1.8 and the fish eye too.

Yep I wouldn't bother with the 1.4 in the 50mm. 1.8 is very good but poor build quality.

I have been using a tamron 17-50 f2.8 a lot an that gives me some really good shots, very good in low light conditions too. It's very good value for money.

I would get a 7d, you can get them pretty cheap online. Big difference between the two in quality.

If you don't have a tripod, get a half decent one and maybe some filters

Cheers
Chris
