Obviously too early to tell at this point, however was any thought put into the 'knee joins', as a possible point of articulation for the legs on the drop and
the rise ? Do you expect the legs to articulate from the base of the shell ? All the plastic crabs ive seen generally just fan out their legs from the base where the leg meets the shell. Fanning either downward or upward according to the force generated on a drop or rise. Having legs segmented and moving from a second pivot point i.e the knee join for lack of better word, would add another dimension to the livelyness of the lure i think. Less 'fan' more scuttle. |

Will these have some sort of Blowie proof plastic? I can see them having those legs picked off by blowies here in wa in miliseconds!

Blowies are a problem, with any soft plastic by the sounds of things, we don't have them as major drama down our way. Cheers Nordy

Hey Nordy - can you post a photo of a real Gippsland spider crab - we've got a similar species in Melbourne but the one you have modeled your crab off looks a little bit different

But will give you idea of a Real Spider Crab We had to modify it to Suit Being Made in Soft Plastic etc. i.e: Shorten and thicken the Legs quite a lot as this thin Legs Long Legs would flop about in a Soft Plastic, On a Real Crab they can Stiffen them and they do when sinking like a Parachute Type effect. If you look at our Crab design you'll see Ive made the Legs in a Parachute Shape and Shortened etc. Also we have Enlarged the Claws to make them Float well, in a defence position. Id have no problems flicking this crab in any Saltwater environment in Oz. Im sure with some of the Creatures and so called Crab soft plastics etc that look very unrealistic that catch fish, these will catch Fish and hopefully more. Lets Hope we can get the Injection Mould as well made as this 3D Print. Minus the woodgrain Effect of the 3D Print. It will be very difficult expensive Injection Mould to make. Cheers Nordy

I really like the look of these spider crabs. They're very common in the estuaries of western Victoria and they're an often used and effective bait. I'll be keen to see how you intend to attach the jighead to them, where it doesn't spoil the overall realistic impression that they obviously have. These lures are a very interesting development and I'll be watching for future updates.

as someone who was grew up fishing in gippsland, i really love the look of your spider crab.
problems ive had in the past trying to rig jigheads on small plastic crabs is 1) finding a jighead with short enough shank to make the whole presentation compact and 2) hook point turning into the crab. my ideal jighead would be no4 or no2 short shank hook with varying weight leadheads and then have a horizontal bit of metal like a knife blade in the head so that when you insert into the crab, the hookpoint cant turn or a couple of small spikes sticking out from the head to lock the hook in the upright position: hook.jpg adapting the above for a hidden weight jighead would be even better. |

Gamakatsu round 211 jigheads are the best for crab style plastics. They can still spin around sometimes but a bit of glue will stop that.
