I've always done it myself, I'm in the camp that believes using the reel and it's own line lay preference will help out in the long run taper wise and quantity. I've shimmed some of my reels and after a few long casts or long runs the line is going to go back on the way the reel is set up anyway.
I used to spool up with the reel alone but now I do it through all or most of the guides on a rod and have the taper loaded up. Gives more consistency I feel. Now if only I could get my bloody assistant (Mrs) to apply perfect consistent pressure the system would be perfect |

You can borrow mine. She must be the model up from yours. Voice activated tension control. Perfect results every time!

I havent used one - but I've never found line twist to be an issue with braid.
Huge issue with monofilament line but not with braid. Spooling bait casters is a piece of piss as no twist is added if you run a pencil through the middle of the spool. But when I'm putting braid on to a "Egg Beater" reel - I just put the spool in a cylindrical vessel full of water. And do about 20 revolutions of the reel handle. Then put some slack in the braid to see if it twists up. If it doesnt twist I keep spooling But if it does twist - I just turn the spool over like flipping a pancake - then the twist goes away. I add tension by running the line between my fingers - as the line is wet, it doesnt heat up like dry line does. If I have to put a heap of line on the reel - I'll use wet polar fleece gloves to add tension to my line to save my fingers I used to do the same thing with mono and it worked back then aswell |
