Actually - While I've got a "Rope-Pro" on the line....

What knot do you start with when securing a load - ie - you walk up to the trailer and its the first knot you tie to anchor the rope?

and are you a fan of quick release knots?

and what percentage of the time do you use rope vs ratchet straps?

I've always used ropes to keep loads on the back of my 1 tonner.
I start out with a clove hitch to the rail, throw the rope over the load, a trucky's hitch and clove hitch to the opposite rail. Never had one come loose on the run and easy as to undo when you're ready.

Certainly wouldn't use a clove hitch to my anchor though as the constant slackening and tightening from swell and chop may loosen it. I start with a bowline and then a few half hitches for security.

Yeah, same here. Clove hitch to start with, then truckies hitch to tension. If there's not enough rope to do a truckies hitch; I'll tie a loose clove hitch at the end, pull the rope tight as I can then pull the tag end of the clove hitch to tighten.

As for quick release knots...I love'm. I'll finish a knot/hitch when I can with a loop hitch. I use quick release knots a lot when rigging lowering setups in trees, they can be undone one-handed even after they've had heaps of shock weight put on them.

The only time I use ratchet straps is when tying my motorbike on the trailer.

Top Notch advice fellas - thanks for that - I've got the truckies hitch in my arsenal but that clove hitch looks a fair bit more versatile and easier to undo than a triple granny followed by a triple hitch

Yeah I dont do alot of rope work but its something I should improve if I want to keep my "Man Card"

In certain circles - being able to tie a truckers hitch is enough to impress but I've got a lot of room for improvement.

Finishing knots with quick release loop would put a few more hairs on my chest.

Why dont you use ratchet straps more often?

Have a google for a "Bowline with a bite", will never work loose and can be easily undone. Hitches to lock a Bowline can come loose if it's constantly being handled or bumped. Bowlines are notorious for coming undone; it's illegal for me to use one to secure a rope to my harness unless it has a bite. Too many tree guys have fallen due to a bowline undoing itself.

Yeah sorry I may have chosen my words carelessly. When I said "Anchor" I was just referring to first knot your tie on a trailer.

I had to teach myself to self to splice a loop for an anchor retrieval float the other day, so any actually anchors will be safe
