Sounder Choice
A friend is having big troubles trying to decide on which fish finder to buy for her 420 quintrex busta.
Im watching closely because im also going to want one in the near future. She does not want lowrance because she just sold one , neither do i. She is liking garmin and hummingbird in the 9 inch screen models with side imaging. She cannot decide which one has the clearest pics of fish and neither can i. We drove around and looked at different models in demo mode and they all look good. Does anyone have screen shots and advise please . She is buying from Whitworths because she lives in Mosman Park and they are right near her house and sell both brands.

unfortunately that's the problem with lowrance, they break and replace it with a remanufactured (read previously broken one) from Mexico and your warranty on the new (remanufactured one) is only half of the original warranty. good units just unreliable.

i am happy enough with my Humminbird 898. Its about 5 years old now, so i assume the newer models will be even better.
I think that most brands are fine these days, you just need to invest some time to play around with whatever unit you buy and learn how to read what you are seeing on the screen. I am just getting a good handle on recognising fish in side view mode now. The other consideration is whether you want to link an electric motor to it at some stage, eg. Minn Kota links to Humminbird and Motorguide links to Lowrance. There should be some good specials at the moments so although Whitworths are good, shop around online as well.

You can link Humminbird, Lowrance or Garmin to a Minnkota, they sell adaptors for each.

Hi Mick
the adapter is for the transducer if the Minn Kota has a built in transducer otherwise Motor guide to Lowrance. Minn Kota to Hummingbird to be able to control from the Head Unit

So this bit has my interest. Sorry for going off track with this thread
I am looking at upgrading my current 55lb Wireless Motorguide in the not too distant future with a spot lock model. Because I run Lowrance on my boat & have been very happy with the current unit, an Xi5 is leading the race.........but the fact that the Min kota has a grooved shaft for running the TX cable in has me looking seriously at these also. Sadly and for reasons perhaps only known to Mercury, the motorguides inbuilt TX is only available on the freshwater models. No good to me. I'm assuming that control from the head unit, refers to the ability of the leccie to follow a path laid out on the plotter. Is that correct?

I bought a freshwater cable steer motorguide in 2002.
I just sold it 2 months ago. It had not corroded and or rusted in any way. The powder coating was perfect.
