No Nets Gippy Lakes

Hi Guys,

Just thought id share this

NEW FB page to Try Stop the Netting of Bream in the Gippsland Lakes System.

The Guys are Trying to Drum up numbers to try stop this practise. Gippsland Lakes is the only Victorian Waterway where netting of Bream is still allowed strange hey.

Please Check it Out Share with your Friends , Make Comments if you have anything to add. We need to protect the Bream as there under serious decline in this system.

Recently Heavy rains have Caused Dirty Flood Water to be Pushed down the Rivers & Bream into the NETs.

As everyone on this forum loves Bream fishing I would hope that everyone will not only support this group but also spread the word so the group can get the numbers it needs so the Government has to take notice and act.Have a look at the page - it is well worth it.You do not need to be a Victorian to support it.Everyone on this forum raves about Mallacoota as a fishery - they removed all the netters years ago and we now reap the rewards.Lets do the same here.

In terms of data to support net removal you only have a examine a number of case studies involving southern NSW lakes.

One I use to fish for two decades became virtually denuded of bream.
You would catch a handful now and again that were undersized and you spent a vast amount of time to catch those few undersize fish.

Folk gave up fishing the lake as it was virtually a waste of time.

Everybody fished the beaches and rocks.

Nets then removed and two sanctuary zones established.

Within 3 years not only did the bream numbers spectacularly increase but the fish got bigger and bigger.

After 7 years I caught a couple of bream the size of snapper. (Had to keep one, to take back to a caravan park to prove my claim of big bream as being taunted about it became a pain). (Note they were the big oceanic yellowfin bream coming in from the beaches and setting up residence in the lake without being instantly netted).

Not only did big bream and bream in numbers come back - monster whiting where I couldn't get my hand around the fishes head, and the first few metre flathead were caught.

Now, fishing a southern NSW lake that has netting, and it is literally being raped.

Not only by netters. Witnessed a filleting table over 5 weeks where 80 to 100 undersized flathead PER DAY crossed it.

Rec fishers can be as destructive as netters and no system is immune to overuse abuse.
