Used to be a lot of fun on the mangroves in the harbour. Even managed a few up Tommy Cut off the Mary River.

what did you get them on bear. i caught all mine on a small red/orange killa lure (the smallest lure they made about 5cm) but that was over 10 years ago. i remember it was tuff going trying to find them but when ya did, they would be schooled up and you would get so manny, it was a hoot and the by catch of barra, queenies and trevs was allways welcom. i did manage to get a miget pikey down here on the sunny coast last year but apart from that its been to long since i got a nother. i love pikeys and i miss darwin so much but i cant belive no one seriously targets them up there, even if theres barra and other stuff to chase, the pikeys pull real hard and deserve a bit more respect from the majoraty of nt fishers rather than being treated like a pest up there (all my mates up there treat them like pests). here the one i got last year on a sx40 308. there has to be some nt breamers up there that love them as much as i do.

We used to get a lot of fly, medium size clousers. I was lucky enough that I was living in Darwin when the new stores opened in the Jape Centre. I live down the road in Rapid Creek.
The lively lure mullets and paddle tail shads also worked well. Just wish I has the lures they have up there in the shops now.

It's hard to keep all your attention on them when the barra go off though. I was lucky enough to get one of my target fish in a 1m plus barra. Didn't get the full length, but it went 28kg. Great to watch it go back. One thing the barra guys have ahead of most, they have been fishing catch and release for many years.

Hey Nuggman, we get plenty of them around here. Often hear stories of Pikeys over 2kg caught around the place (always on bait). Never seen one yet but have seen plenty of 40cm+ models, just yet to catch one. Apparently live baiting for Barra is the secret.
