How effective is the FG knot?

I am going to start using the FG knot instead of a double uni, but was curious to know has anyone ever had the FG knot break at the knot, or otherwise fail?

It is a great knot.

The knot, if done properly, won't break unless your leader is much heavier than your mainline, in which case it makes sense for the knot to give.

One thing to be careful of is making sure you synch it tight and do plenty of uni knots at the end. I've had a few let go in the early days because they have unravelled.

Would joining 12lb SAS braid (diameter equivalent to 6lb sunline) to a 12lb fluoro leader be alright? And I'm not exactly sure of what you mean by putting uni knots at the end, but I've locked it with 4-5 half hitches.

Yeah sorry mate half hitches is correct, I just referred to them as uni knots as i tend to do a mix of half hitches and uni's at the end, but same result.

If it's truly 12lb and so is your leader, then it could pop anywhere. Fact is many braids which are that thin don't break at their stated breaking strain and I have heard mixed results with the SAS so I really couldn't tell you mate.

Just practice tying a few and breaking them off and see how you go

I put a drop of a 'superglue' product used by fly tiers. It dries flexibly.

Hmm yeah I've heard of that being done. I might have to get some, for when I want to be super sure of my knot. What would people here consider the best loop knot for tying lures on?

1.30 mins, you will never break one on a bream and if snagged 95% of the time it will fail at the loop knot getting your leader back

I do 4 half hitches over the mainline and tag (ensuring to reverse the direction around the mainline for each hitch as this locks em in) and then 3 reversed half hitches just around the main line locking under the tag. Haven't had a single hitch unravel yet as far as I can tell.

I suppose any decent tacklestore. Specialty fly stores would have it for sure.
