Tail up or tail down - single tail grubs

I've always rigged tail down like the plastic at the top of the picture.

But I've recently started mucking around with tail up.

And I dont know if its just me - but I reckon tail up might be a much more unstable presentation on the drop. I swear my tail up presentations are much more likely to spiral on the drop with slack line.

I havent done alot of testing and there could be other factors at play - (such as my dodgy rigging) but has anyone else experienced this?

Don't know if there is a right way or wrong way to this tail up tail down thing never thought about it a whole lot. Personally i have always been a tail up person with no specific issues. I do not think the plastics packets come with any specific direction as to this either. Softer tails such as Zman would react differently to say a tail from the Bozo range which are much stiffer. As long as you are catching Larry i do not think it makes a whole lot of difference. I will be interested to see what others say i might learn a bit more.

I have always rigged them tail up.

I might have to try tail down.

Yeah I fish a bit from docks and there are long drops to the bottom where the lure is free falling - sometimes I let it drop on as slack a line as I can - so I dont want it spiraling during that drop - I only noticed it the other night so I'll see if it continues

p.s. I only think of this stuff when I'm not catching

Yeah alot of people swear by tail up but I wonder if they've watched their lure travel to the bottom on a slack line - it might be great for hopping along the bottom - but getting hit on the drop is a big part of my pinky fishing so I'm trying to work out if tail up, on a slack line, is slowing me down.

I'm still not sure if tail up is the issue - but when I rerigged the lure it swam much better tail down.

I guess one hidden benefit of tail down would be that the hook would not foul in or hook up the tail as much as tail up which puts the hook point right in front of the tail especially on the drop. I suffer this especially with some double tails i use

I’ve always rigged tail up & if running low on grubs, reuse with the tail down. Never noticed any issue with either. I usually have a long cast from the tinny & not a direct drop. Might set up 2 rods next time and try each way

Squidgy Wrigglers are designed to be tail up, if that is any indication.

Yeah maybe as sevric mentioned - the massive fat tail on my placs may be having an influence. Might trim some fat with the scissors and see if it makes a difference

There we go - that should cut down on the influence the tail is having.

(middle one is normal size)

Heh Heh Heh - They do look a bit different when swimming on the drop.

I'll try to find some vids to see if I'm just imagining things - if I cant - my goldfish are going to have an annoying evening of filming

I think it might be time to upgrade my camera - but if you crank it up to 1080p - bite your tongue - and squint - you can see the tail up presentation is more unstable - more of a side to side wobble - I'll try to slow it down some more

Edit..........................................

I tried to slow it down but the blurriness got too bad
