Getaway Outdoors WA Bream Classics Kayak Grand Final 2017 Interviews

The Getaway Outdoors WA Bream Classic Kayak Grand Final for 2017 was held in conjunction with the Perth International Boat Show. 26 Anglers were greeted with strong winds and plenty of rain at the start location of the Narrows Bridge, which also offered anglers a range of options with lot of favoured spots all within equal striking distance.

Sitting in 4th spot over night with 535gms to make up, before storming to a commanding victory was W.As most decorated bream angler Alex Greisdorf, weighing in a full bag on day one for 1.770kg, before adding 2.150kg on day two to hit the front and hold off the overnight leaders who all failed to add a kicker fish to their day two bags.

When asked how the weekend had gone Alex replied, “I had a good prefish but didn’t really pin any big fish just good numbers, but I had a plan to head upriver to my usual haunts. I really struggled early on day one though, I dropped quite a few fish and it wasn’t until about 10am that I picked up my first good keeper, from there I just tried to put a bag together to stay in the hunt. I was throwing 2.5” Zman bloodworm grubz on a 1/12th TT jighead and tried to target areas that fished ok in pre-fish”.

“On day two I headed upriver again to the same areas, from the causeway up through Belmont and Maylands, I had keyed into a little pattern over the previous few months, I had a depth I liked to look for and had a fair idea where they were sitting so I really tried to target those spots. I was throwing 2.5” Zman grubz in motor oil and bloodworm slim swimz but on a TT 1/16th jighead as the wind was down a little in comparison to yesterday. I struggled in a few spots and wasted a bit of time, but I picked up a good fish and then a few upgrades throughout the day so I was pretty happy to put together a heavier bag than yesterday”.

When asked if he did anything different to others Alex replied “maybe a few things, I run Sunline FC Rock as leader but in about 4-5 meter lengths, it was from fishing with Charlie Sakayo who is now over East, and my sounder, I really use that a lot trying to locate where the fish are, build up a range of spots and then specifically targeting them. Less time casting where you have not had success I guess, and then without doubt the Hobie reverse drive has been critical in fighting and landing fish and maintaining a good casting position”.

When asked if he anyone to thank, Alex replied “I have to give a special mention to Getaway Outdoors for getting me into a Hobie Kayak, they are impressive and just keep getting better, Lowrance and Tackle Tactics. Then of course all the sponsors for their support, the WA Classic team for a great year, and all the anglers that make the effort over the year”.

Alex also claimed the 2017 Kayak angler of the year award in a tightly fought contest, overnight any one of three anglers could have won depending on each anglers finishing position for the weekend. Alex put the result beyond doubt with his win to hold off his closest rivals, one of which finished second for the weekend.

Sitting 2nd overnight and right in the thick of things was Massimo Salamone weighing in six bream for 3.680kg. After confirmation he had claimed the first of two wildcards to the Hobie Australian Championships, a very happy Massimo was asked how the weekend had gone “I am stoked, firstly for finishing second and then for picking up the wildcard to the Hobie Australian Championships that will be held in W.A. Day one I headed upriver to where I do most of my social fishing, I found a nice little flat that the fish were holding on, and so I just worked that patch for the whole weekend pretty much. I picked up 15-20 fish on the first day and headed straight back there on day two”.

“They weren’t quite as receptive as day one, and I eventually worked out a little pattern where I had to fish painstakingly slow, I would whip the lure across the surface to start with, then a 10 second pause before the slowest roll I could put on it. It was just a matter of slowing it right down, I was throwing Zman 2.5” grubz in the motor oil colour, as well as prolure uv worm. I also think the 2.5 meter leader in 3lb yamatoyo harris fighter made a big difference as well”.

When asked if he had anyone to thank Massimo replied “a big thanks to www.Lurepro.com.au for all their support over the year, and then a big thanks for the organizers and sponsors for the great effort and support they give, it has been another awesome season”

In third place and in the envious position of overnight leader was Shane Owens, whose day one bag dragged the scales down to 2.300kg to hold a nice lead. His bag was anchored by his 840 gram day one HOBIE POLARIZED BIG BREAM. When asked how the weekend had gone, Shane replied “it would have been better if I could hold the same position as I had overnight, but that’s fishing, Alex is an extremely talented angler and he was always going to be the one to beat. Anyway day one was good fun, I hit Riverside Drive straight up and found them chewing straight away. I pulled the hooks on a 5 or 6 fish that felt really good, but boated a nice bag on my favorite bait breath rocking crab in green pumpkin. I would have boated 25 odd legal’s so there were a few upgrades that really helped”.

“Day two though was a different story, I changed plans to head further up, and in the end I just wasted time, I felt like I missed the bite window and had to really work to scrape together a bag. I pinned three legal’s all day once again on the rocking crab, with a 1/20 hidden weight jig. I was using 4lb nitlon leader for the weekend, so much like Alex and Massimo I had to fish a pretty light leader”.

When asked who else he had to Shane replied “Gladiator are my major sponsor and are awesome supporters, they have just brought me onboard as a field tester so I am really looking forward to the future. Also Tackle HQ, they have a fantastic range of lures and worth a visit, they always have some good information to pass on. Then of course Matt and Getaway Outdoors for the way they get behind the comps in W.A, and of course the event organisers. Thanks for a great year”.

Storming into fourth place with the biggest bag of the weekend was day two specialist Andy Mitchell who added 2.525kg on day two. When asked how he had gone Andy replied “I struggled day one, and only had two keepers so I was a fair way off the lead. Day two I headed just down the road here by the brewery, an area I never fish and it was a little slow early but soon I found them biting. I was rotating through a few Zman colours in the 2” grubz, and would have pinned 20 plus fish, lots of small ones but some good upgrades as well”.

And good upgrades they were with two fish both going 930 and 940 grams and with either one being big enough for the day two HOBIE POLARIZED BIG BREAM.

In 5th place and claiming the final wildcard to the Australian Championships was Paul Burton, who after sitting third overnight, held on from a fast finishing Suzie Siranovic. Giving W.A eight anglers in the Australian Championships to be at Manduarh Quay resort on the 16 – 19th of November.

So that wraps up the 2017 Kayak series with the next Atomic WA Bream Classic boat round to be held in Mandurah on the 15th of October.
