It was the 1k budget and lack of experience with baitcasters that stopped me putting my 2c in

I would have thought a whole bunch of guys would come in with heaps of suggestions on this subject as i'm in the same situation in finding a BC for mulloway.
Maybe the baitcasting users left town to go fishing ?

I know about spinning reels but nothing about bait casters, had a used shimano given me years ago and never gave it a good try out.
So i wanted to buy something for mulloway and it had to be light weight and inexpensive.
Did heaps of searches on youtube and decided on 2 kastkings Assassin and Stealth which had good reviews and a starting point. The otherone i'm considering is the newly released Shimano SLX but the main aim was light weight.
These will give me a chance to work out if i'll continues using baitcasters

Picked up a Quantum S3 which have a oversized spool should be good for the extra line in a smaller bodied caster

I’ve had a long history with baitcast reels

Heavy use for multiple species in the north and south, ran a servicing gig for a few years in darwin, upgrades, the works

My recommendation would be to buy a second hand reel from one of the major brands and get it serviced or do it yourself.

The older models are simpler machines, slightly less plastic and have proven history as performers, normally

And in regards to the original post, using a bc reel for casting to Jew fish is dumb
imho, especially using 20lb and light lures
Get a spin combo with your 1k, or put it all on black and double it, buy a reel sexy combo

I’ve got an Alderbaran matched up to an Edge BCR 663. Beautiful . Thinking about one of those orange 13 reels for heavier work. Need to do some homework

(Obviously what I'm typing stems from personal experience and may not be relevant to the way everyone targets Jews)

But in my experience, bait casters and landbased Jewies are a bad mix - especially if you need long casts to reach them (but theres plenty of other reasons)

A baitcaster is a beautiful machine when used within its limitations - but those limitations are immediately apparent in a landbased scenario, where long casts, from tight structure, are required

After the first session, I was pretty sure it wasnt going to work - and after the second, I vowed never to use one for land based Jews again

It would be much easier to use from a boat but that wont get rid of all the problems I associate with bait casters and Jewie fishing.

I reckon save the bait caster for lobbing heavy lures, where accuracy, over short to medium distance, is vital.

That may be what your Jewie fishing sessions require - if so - then a bait caster would be perfect.

I'm not saying they wont work - but for me - spin tackle is much better suited to the variety of lures and distances I need to cover
