There is some really nasty snags in the west. We split a brand new S/S solas prop on an unknown nasty the other night heading towards the weir.
Made a sound that'd give ya nightmares for weeks. |

Went and checked it out for the first time today my mate lost something weighty up near the weir, crazy amounts of mullet and herring around. No jacks or cod did manage an average size GH on surface though. Some mighty big nasties there we had a retriever so no losses, most came from others lost gear(scored a blade ) Best to take a broom stick if you plan to fish this spot LB and succeed. Heaps of people out there today even some dude with his mate fishing with half a 2pc rod should have got a pic aussie as kind of like a spin handline.

Best jack lures are anything resembling a smaller jack. Due to them being territorial, cast tight as you can to structure and hang on!

Hey 'tweedz' hope that hook is only through the top lip of that livie... Best way to drown one is putting it through both lips, I remember a livebaiting guru 'Straddie Bob' telling me before he passed away - hook through the top lip for tide in & tide out (keeps air running through their gills), and hook through the rear back for sitting tides or slow currents...
Anyhow cant wait to see the Coomera river warm up a little more, especially near the weir... Take two rod setup's - bass in the arvo's on freshwater side and jacks, sharks and god know's what else at night in the salt... Thats where I got my 52cm PB - and around the corner some crazy middle eastern euro fella saying that he caught a 78cm Jack... Also to just tell ya tweedz, those cyclone chain link fence bags filled with rocks up near the bridge - there were a few of them that got washed down the river and made it just past the weir - saw one on a super low tide when on my kayak... Since the latest flood things have changed and the council has moved some of the rocks (if not all of them) and moved the concrete slabs around also... When motoring through there its all touch and go up there at the moment! |

myself and a mate been fishing the coomera all summer in the early mornings but mostly afternoon after work, all the jacks we have caught have been off rock walls and from snags hooked a couple from pontoons but none have been landed.... just slow roll soft plastics around you will get them just be patient .

Zman 4" Swimmerz in the red colour, or gulp 5" jerk shads on 1/8th 4/0 TT snag less jigheads both cast super tight in to structure. If my memory serves me that gulp/TT combo should have the jerk shads sinking close to horizontally

One of the best times to chase jacks is right now. Why, because no one else really is. For some reason its commonly told that Jacks go off the bite through winter. Well no that's not really the case at all. With so many fisho's out after them night and day during summer you see so many being caught because for every 1 bloke chasing them in winter there's 20 blokes chasing them in summer. Once you catch one and release it, that fish will tend to go off the bight for the rest of the day. Needless to say Jacks can go up to 2 weeks without a feed.
Tactics do change in winter though. Without going into a novel this is how I chase them in under 19deg waters... Night time - minimum of 20cm live mullet. 25cm is perfect size, one out wide, one in close. Big Jacks do like to travel at night more than in summer to keep the blood flowing. Around banks, mangroves, etc Sugapen Surface Walker. Early morning/Late arvo - Big mullet slabs. Bullies are best no older than 2 days, full fillets. Zerek Cherabin 4" Colour 10. Location, tide, times, lies with your system and man hours. Here is one of the latest cooler water jacks for some motivation |
