The others have covered it, it mostly getting a guilt free fishing session in on apparently with no real loss of brownie points.
That being said if you have a 2hr fishless attention span then comps are not for you.

Done a few kayak bream comps and although i have caught bream in every one i have not always caught legal bream in every one ! This could be a bit disheartening for some people, especially if you dont even catch a fish. I really enjoy comps as has certainly made me a better fisherman and to think more about lure presentation, fishing structure etc. Its always in the back of mind to produce good results within a certain time period and i enjoy that sweet sense of the endorphins it produces. I really compete against myself in these events, striving to do better and where i come in the overall result is secondary.
I am not in them for the fame and fortune if there is any but its a great way to see and hear different fishing methods etc, meet all kinds of fisher folk. You only have to give one a go to see if its your thing or not. |

What drives me to tournament fishing:-
1) Excuse to go fishing prior to the Competition. Ie: Practice fish 2) Another Excuse to go fishing On the comp days 3) A reason to buy more lures 4) A reason to buy more rods 5) Competing against likeminded peers, is a great opportunity to find new innovative techniques 6) Socialising in fishing is more rewarding than work 7)The detrmination to get just one more fish...... 8) 7 Hours behind and electric is better than 7 hours behind a keyboard. 9) The locations that the Tournie scene will take you to. 10) One day ill beat that b..as..rd |

I havent done too many comps, far from seasoned but I've found the ones that i've topped up the winners cheques in so far....
The chance of fishing somewhere thats new, or with new people (abt qualifiers) or fishing with a mate in a team's event. Watching new techniques, who ever thought that fish that live outside of victoria actually eat vibes? The chance to get away for a few days and go fishing, somehow saying "its a comp, I need to go" is better and more productive than saying "can i go fishing for no real reason for 2 days " I like to fish for long periods of time, generally 5 hours as a minimum so a 7 hour comp isnt too bad. I do find that after 5 hours of nothing....the last 2 hours can be a chore...but a chore i'd rather do than cleaning the house!!

Good point guys... I had not really counted on the competitive drive to get the adrenalin flowing. Its probably different in practice sessions because there isn't that incentive that a comp provides. I suppose I think back to when I played basketball in my uni days that I could play in a competitive setting for hours but when I'm by myself practising shooting 3 pointers and free throws, I'd have had enough after half an hour.

Looking at getting into kayak comps to CHUNQX. Sitting down for 7 hours would be hard. I'm gonna get a Pro angler now so I can stand up!
Having never done a comp before I'm no expert but for me the thought of getting a doughnut is enough to keep me going. I don't like ever getting 0 fish, let alone getting one in a comp! |

Hey chunqx
I guess to your question it's my passion like the other boys it's the anticipation of a comp coming up and doing the prefishes, buying more lures that sit in my box and probably won't use but you just never know when it's needed, actually it's sounding like going from a passion to an addiction but at least it's a healthy addiction.when I get involved in anything I give it my best everytime as well so I suppose it's that competitive nature coming out in people which is strange for me because for I started taking up breaming again I wasn't that competitive now I live for it |

Oh, and one more very important thing:
when fishing the comp, don't compete against other competitors, compete against the fish |

yer but until u sit there for hrs on end getting nothing then tying on a lure or different plastic thats outside the box from the normal and getting ur bag in the last hour or half hour makes it all worth it and just thinking about what ur going to do or throw next to catch a fish is fun for me thats why i do it not for the money thats for sure and i fish yak comps as well and 6 hrs in a yak is a long time and even longer when your not catching anything

It's all about the "social side" of things for the Mulisha.

To me it's more about the social side however, I find the comp dosen't seem to drag on. Most days on the water in comps seem to be over in a flash! I am always thinking "where did the time go?"
I don't know about the chance to get away from the Mrs, either. Over here, a lot of the families come and share the atmosphere. The sport is for everyone.

G'day guys, 30-60 teams or boats you guys are spoilt now on the East Coast the big comps are attracting 80-90 teams per round. It's getting insane, the fun is still there though. For myself and mates it would be the chance to catch up, fish against each other, share info within the circle and the friendly competative environment that is slowly becoming more dog eat dog. The money comes way down the list however it's what drives us to do our best on the day.
If anybody is in it for the money they need to head to the USA, good luck with that also. Simply we are fishermen so we fish!!! It's just an excuse to do it as a group and if your lucky enough to have some success it's not the money that makes it worth it, it's the congratulations and back slapping from our peers that is!!
